Detroit Pistons rookie center Andre Drummond wasn’t able to participate on Friday night in the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge with a back injury.  Selected by Shaquille O’Neal as part of Team Shaq, Drummond was on hand to talk about his rookie campaign.

“It’s great that the coaches really named me to be here and Shaq actually chose me as well with his third pick,” said Drummond, disappointed that he wasn’t able to play.  “It’s great being out here and great being noticed but I’m going to stick to being an assistant coach and stick alongside Shaq.”

Drummond is sidelined another three to five weeks with a stress fracture of the left lumbar vertebra.

Through 50 games, Drummond averaged 7.3 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.7 blocks a game.  The Pistons may have a special combination with forward/center Greg Monroe and Drummond, once the two fully develop.

Right now Drummond is just trying to heal and learn how he can impact the NBA game.

“I think from the first game, I think [Coach Lawrence Frank] can vouch for me too, I think from my first game up until now I’ve gotten better on a daily basis,” he said.  “I just work hard, that’s really what it comes down to – giving 100 percent every single day.”

Drummond was improving dramatically, prior to his injury.  In a recent one-point loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, he pulled down 11 boards and blocked four shot, while scoring nine points.  Drummond he’s just scratching the surface.

“I’m getting a glimpse of what I could be,” Drummond said.  “I’m not really going to get big-headed at all.  I just know that it’s all effort and energy and hard work that it’s going to take for me to be good.”

Drummond doesn’t want to settle on being just “good.”

“I think I could be great one day,” he said.

Magic rookie forward Andrew Nicholson has been chosen as a replacement for the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge game at the All-Star weekend in Houston.

Nicholson replaces Detroit Pistons center Andre Drummond, who can't play because of a back injury.

Nicholson has appeared in 48 games this season for Orlando and made his 14th start against Portland on Sunday night. The 19th overall pick in last year's draft entered the game averaging 7.6 points and 3.5 rebounds.

His scoring average is 10th among rookies this season.

Nicholson, who will play for Shaquille O'Neal's "Team Shaq", joins Orlando teammate and second-year center Nikola Vucevic, who was previously selected for the game. Vucevic will be playing on Charles Barkley's "Team Chuck".

NBA News 2013: Pistons push Drummond to get healthy

Long term, there is nothing wrong with Andre Drummond’s back that a little rest and some of his mother’sJamaican cooking can’t fix.

But in the short term, the news that Drummond will be out for four to six weeks is a small blow to the Detroit Pistons because the rookie from Connecticut has created a buzz among fans.

The last 2 1/2 months of the season was going to feature Drummond paired with teammate Greg Monroe, allowing the frontcourt of the future to grow accustomed to playing together. It’s a pairing coach Lawrence Frank has used more as the season has progressed, so the injury is a setback for those plans.

Still, Frank said before the Pistons beat the Milwaukee Bucks, 105-100, on Saturday that Drummond has to get to work.

“Right now his job is to get healthy,” Frank said before the game. “That’s his job.

“He has to do everything he can to rehab and listen, follow the directions of our training staff and doctors to get himself right.”

Frank said the coaching staff will make a point to keep Drummond involved, showing him game film and letting him learn by watching.

“He gets a chance to look at the game in a different way, and I think he’s already noticed some things,” Frank said. “You turn every negative into a positive, and you get better intellectually and physically when you’re injured.”

Drummond, 19, has been placed in a special custom brace. He will be evaluated on a regular basis, said team doctor Ben Paolucci.

NBA News 2012: Time To Fear The Beard

Houston Rockets logo
Houston Rockets logo (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

This is what the Houston Rockets have been missing for years, ever since Yao Ming started missing long stretches of games with foot injuries.

Houston fans have known it, too, even if they haven’t put it in so many words. They have seen team after team make great plays and stay tough down the stretch of games, often falling short by a basket or two, a mere handful of points making the difference between a playoff berth and a trip to the lottery.

What the Rockets have been missing is a closer.

Every great team has one. In fact, every playoff team has one. It’s that one player who shrugs off the toughest of defensive schemes to make basket after basket to pull his team ahead for a win. The Oklahoma City Thunder have Kevin Durant, the Miami HEAT have LeBron James, the Dallas Mavericks have Dirk Nowitzki and the Houston Rockets have James Harden.

It’s early, of course, and there is a lot of basketball to be played, but through two games the Rockets have had a presence that left the team when Yao retired.

Harden scored 37 points in Houston’s season-opener against the Detroit Pistons, and in his encore performance he was even better. Unlike the Pistons, the Atlanta Hawks fought back from a 14-point deficit to take the lead late in the fourth quarter. That’s when Harden put the team on his back and scored 18 of his career-high 45 points in the final frame.

Harden didn’t do it alone, of course, but then the Rockets have never been a team to stand around and watch. Jeremy Lin had 21 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, Omer Asik chipped in a career-high 19 rebounds and Marcus Morris scored a career-high 17 points off the bench.

NBA News 2010: Lakers rookies Derrick Caracter, Devin Ebanks try to seize their opportunities

The rookies got some playing time, and that's all that really mattered to them and to the Lakers.

Neither rookie stood out against the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night at The Palace in Auburn Hills.

But forwards Derrick Caracter and Devin Ebanks did just enough against the Pistons to earn a measure of praise from the man they most have to impress.

"Derrick got some rebounds and messed around in there. Devin ran the lane and got a couple of steals. He was active."

Caracter played 15 minutes 24 seconds, his season high.

He had six points and five rebounds, two offensive. He was three for five from the field.

Ebanks played 7:57.

He had four points on one-for-five shooting, four rebounds and one blocked shot.

NBA News 2010: D-Rose Just Can't Shoot Enough

Derrick RoseImage via Wikipedia
Through two (and in many cases three) games, Derrick Rose is leading the league in the league in scoring at 33.5ppg, but that's not surprising when one considers the fact that he's also leading the league in field goal attempts, blowing even Kevin Durant (24 FGA per game) out of the water in that particular category.

In fact, only four other players in the entire league—Durant included—are shooting the ball 20+ times a night, and nobody is even close to Derrick's attempts.

So what gives? Why is Rose, who averaged 17.6 attempts per game last season, hoisting up 29 per game so far this year?

"I think he recognizes where we are and what we need, and right now we need more scoring from him," Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau said after Chicago's come-from-behind win at home against the Pistons on Saturday.

"If I'm open, I'm going to shoot," Rose said about his shooting barrage early in the season, which even he admits has a little something to do with Carlos Boozer being out. "I'm not passing up any shots because we are missing a key factor to our team that would help us score the ball."

On the one hand, it's viable to expect Rose's attempts to decrease when Boozer gets back, but on the other hand, the recent offensive outburst seems like more a change in aggressiveness than compensation for a missing player.

"I'm just attacking," Rose admitted, adding, "I'm going to try and attack it every time."

NBA News 2010: Arron Afflalo: "I'm ready."

Arron Afflalo of the Denver NuggetsImage via Wikipedia
The Nuggets acquired him in July of 2009 and in his first year with the team, Afflalo averaged 8.8 points a game on 46.5% shooting including 43.4% behind the arc.

Although preseason stats can be somewhat misleading, through three exhibition games, Arron has averaged 21.7 points a game while shooting 54.8% from the field and 52.9% from the arc.

Coach George Karl had nothing but praise for Afflalo after his 27-point night against the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday in a 100-95 Denver victory.

"I joked with him all summer, 'You better ready man because I'm going to have to play you.'  He's worked as hard as anybody I've ever coached in the summertime, working on his game and on his shot," said Karl.  "I don't think people in the league think he's a top three-point shooter but we think he is.  We think he's going to shoot over 40% the rest of his career."

At 6'5", 215 pounds, Arron was originally drafted out of UCLA by the Detroit Pistons.  His reputation was that of a top-notch perimeter defender but the Pistons dealt him to the Nuggets in a cap space move.

Afflalo talked about his efforts over the summer.

"Over the offseason, I tried to work hard and get better," said Arron.  "I've always done that.  It just took some years for my maturity, my confidence and everything.  The more comfortable I feel on the court, the more confident I am.  I really took a huge leap this summer.  I've always worked on my game."
