WNBA 2010: US wins women’s world championship beating Czechs

KARLOVY VARY, Czech Republic (AP)—Sue Bird handed the world championship trophy to Tamika Catchings and the two embraced, sharing a large grin.

The only blemish on their distinguished U.S. basketball career was now gone after an 89-69 victory over the Czech Republic in the women’s basketball title game Sunday night.

It was one sweet win for Bird, Catchings, and Diana Taurasi, who were on the U.S. team that finished a disappointing third in the 2006 worlds.

The three were determined not to let that happen again.

“There’s definitely a feeling of satisfaction, redemption,” Bird said. “It was tough losing in Brazil, it was very difficult. We were definitely on a mission. It started in the Olympics, that’s what fueled us then, but this being the same tournament we lost in, we wanted to get that gold back.”

Angel McCoughtry scored 18 points, Taurasi added 16, and Bird had 11 for the Americans, who now have won the world championship eight times—the previous time being Catchings’ first in 2002.

“This one was definitely sweeter,” Catchings said. “Knowing what we went through in 2006 to erase that made this special.”

To win the gold, in a similar situation to the men’s team that won in Turkey, the U.S. had to get past the host nation in the final.

NBA News 2010: Serbia tops defending champ Spain

Serbia knocked defending champion Spain out of the world championship Wednesday when Milos Teodosic made a long 3-pointer with 3.1 seconds left for a 92-89 quarterfinal victory.

Spain erased an eight-point deficit in the final four minutes to tie it on Marc Gasol's basket with 25 seconds remaining. After a timeout, Serbia patiently ran its offense until Teodosic -- 1-of-7 on 3-pointers at that point -- pulled up from straightaway, well beyond the arc.

To foul or not to foul. That was the question facing Spain in the final seconds against Serbia on Wednesday, writes Chris Sheridan Blog

"He's a great player and he has a great feeling for the big shot," Spain coach Sergio Scariolo said.

The Spaniards couldn't get a final shot off, with Jorge Garbajosa losing the ball after a timeout. Serbia's players celebrated at midcourt as Spain's Sergio Llull kicked the ball deep into the stands.

"I think it was a very, very tough game. Maybe the best one until now in Istanbul," Serbia coach Dusan Ivkovic said.

Serbia advanced to face Turkey in a semifinal game Saturday.

NBA News 2010: Turkey beats France 95-77

ISTANBUL (AP)—Turkey used a 21-4 run spanning the second and third quarters on Sunday to eliminate France from the basketball world championship with a 95-77 win.

Phoenix Suns forward Hedo Turkoglu scored 20 points and Sinan Guler added 17 for Turkey, which played its first tournament game in the new Sinan Erdem Dome. A nearly capacity crowd of 15,000—including 22 members of Turkey’s national football squad sitting courtside—watched the home team make shoot 35 of 55 from the field in the round of 16 game.

Turkey’s reward is to play Slovenia on Wednesday in the quarterfinals.

“Everybody knows the fans in Turkey are loud,” France’s Boris Diaw said. The red-clad masses didn’t disappoint in this one, constantly cheering their team from before the tipoff through Guler’s layup at about three minutes left in the first half to put Turkey up 32-24.

Diaw, who plays for the Charlotte Bobcats, scored 21 points. De Colo added 15 for France, which had started strong in the preliminary round with three straight wins but fell to its group’s fourth-seeded spot after losing its last two games. Collett said he wished France could have played other teams from Turkey’s preliminary round group.
