NBA News 2013: Dwight Howard Told By Lakers He Won't Be Traded

Dwight Howard has been privately told on repeated occasions by Mitch Kupchak that the Los Angeles Lakers will not trade him, according to sources.
The Lakers have not directly asked Howard if he plans to re-sign with the Lakers, but sources the Lakers are "very confident" that he will remain with the franchise on a new contract.
Sources say Howard truly does not know what he will decide in the summer, but that he will definitely not ask to be traded.
Howard can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

NBA News 2013: Spurs Could Trade For Al Jefferson

The San Antonio Spurs are the frontrunners to acquire Al Jefferson, according to a report.
Jefferson will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason and the Utah Jazz are unlikely to re-sign them.
“Those teams are practically incestuous, they are on such good terms internally,” one NBA source said.

Wade's biggest takeaway was in regards to the absence of one of the Nets' minority owners.

NBA News 2012: Warriors re-sign Rush to 2-year, $8M deal

Rush agreed to an $8 million, two-year deal Tuesday to stay with the Golden State Warriors after becoming the team's most reliable reserve last season. Rush's agent, Mark Bartelstein, said the second year of the contract is a player option. The deal is pending a physical that Rush will take in the next few days.
''He's thrilled,'' Bartelstein said. ''He had a terrific season with the Warriors. He loves playing for Mark Jackson and he made it clear to me from the beginning of free agency that this is where he wanted to be.''
The signing highlights a busy two days for Golden State's front office.
The Warriors agreed to sign free agent power forward Carl Landry - also represented by Bartelstein - on Monday. That deal is also worth about $8 million over two years with a player option for the second season.
Both moves solidify the bench and likely Golden State's roster. The Warriors now have 15 players signed and no more salary cap space to shuffle without going into the luxury tax.
Rush, a restricted free agent, averaged 9.8 points and 3.9 rebounds in 26 minutes per game last season. Rush shot 45.2 percent from 3-point range - sixth best in the NBA - and was Golden State's best option off the bench.
Before free agency began, the Warriors extended a qualifying offer to Rush on June 26 to make him a restricted free agent. The tender allowed the team to match any offer Rush received this summer.
No need for that now.
The 27-year-old Rush appeared in 65 games last season after coming over in a trade from Indiana for Lou Amundson. He posted career highs by shooting 50 percent from the field and 79 percent on free throws, fitting seamlessly into Jackson's system and staying steady despite a rash of injuries that shattered the roster.
Rush was originally drafted 13th overall by Portland in 2008 after leading Kansas to the national championship. He was then traded to Indiana along with Jarrett Jack and Josh McRoberts for Jerryd Bayless and Ike Diogu.

NBA News 2012: Jodie Meeks Weighing Free Agency

For the past month, the 24-year-old has received countless phone calls and text messages from people asking for updates, but that’s to be expected when you’re one of the best free agents remaining on the market. Meeks, an unrestricted free agent, is talking with a number of teams and weighing his options.
“I’ve gotten interest from the Lakers, Bucks and Wizards,” Meeks told HOOPSWORLD. “There are five or six teams, but those three are at the forefront right now because I’ve been talking to them the most. I really like those teams and I like what they bring to the table. I’m looking forward to signing, whenever that may be.”
Meeks has proven that he can start in the NBA, which separates him from many of the remaining free agents. He has started 114 games in his 200-game career, averaging 8.1 points over the last three years. Last year with the Philadelphia 76ers, Meeks started 50 games. While he has shown that he can be a significant contributor in the NBA, he believes his best basketball is still ahead of him.
“I feel like I still have a lot to develop,” Meeks said. “I’m still young, only 24 years old, and I have a lot of things to show in my career. I’m looking forward to, whatever team I go to, showing what I can do and trying to win as much as possible.”
Meeks has been training and spending time with his family in his hometown of Atlanta in an effort to keep his mind off of free agency. Rather than worrying about his next contract, he’s working on his game and making sure that he’ll be ready to play at a high level for his new team.
“I’m just trying to find the best fit for myself,” Meeks said. “I just have to be patient. I know that when it comes time to sign, I’ll be ready to help the team that picks me up. I’m staying in shape and keeping myself busy this summer. I’m keeping a winning attitude. I’m very upbeat and positive. I don’t worry about these kinds of things. I’m just letting it play out and I’m looking forward to next season.”
“I’m from Atlanta and I come here every offseason,” Meeks said. “My family is here and I’m down here working out. I’m just working on all aspects of my game. I think you can always improve. There’s never a time when a player can’t get better. I’m working on my lateral quickness and ballhandling, and I’m putting up a lot of shots. I’m just keeping a positive attitude and waiting to see where I end up.”
While Meeks wouldn’t rule out a return to Philadelphia, it seems unlikely since the 76ers didn’t extend a qualifying offer to Meeks prior to the start of free agency and then proceeded to sign shooting guard Nick Young to a one-year deal worth $6 million.
“I loved playing in Philadelphia,” Meeks said. “It was a great city and I was there for two and a half years. I have nothing but great things to say about those guys. They gave me an opportunity to play and I wish them the best of luck.”
Now, Meeks is looking forward to signing his new contract. This was his first time going through the free agency process and while he has had a positive experience, he’s looking forward to focusing on basketball again rather than business.
“Free agency hasn’t been bad,” Meeks said. “I’m just staying patient and positive. I’m just looking forward to seeing what happens. I know I’m going to go to a good situation where I can win as much as possible. That’s the main thing for me, winning.”
“Teams that I’ve been on in the NBA have always made the playoffs, except for my rookie year,” Meeks added. “I was with the Bucks for most of my rookie year and they made the playoffs, but then I went to Philly for end of the season and they didn’t make it. But for the last two years, we made the playoffs. I bring a lot of positive energy on and off the court, and I think that carries over to winning.”
Los Angeles, Milwaukee and Washington seem to be the frontrunners to land his services as of right now. In the coming days, Meeks will weigh his options and then make a decision.

NBA News 2012: Blazers and Hickson agree to 1-year deal

Miller would not disclose financial terms.
Hickson was claimed by the Blazers off waivers last March. He appeared in 19 games with Portland, averaging 15.1 points and 8.3 rebounds.

(Image credit: Getty Images via @daylife)Much to the relief of Philadelphia 76ers fans, 7-foot-1 center Spencer Hawes isn’t going anywhere for the next two years.
Hawes, who had become a free agent at the end of this past season, has agreed to terms on a new contract with the 76ers, according to multiple reports. The two-year deal is worth a reported $13 million, according to those reports.
The 76ers had offered Hawes a new deal at the end of the 2010-11 season, when he was a restricted free agent, but he declined to sign at that time, preferring to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the recent 2011-12 season.
Hawes was originally drafted in 2007 by the Sacramento Kings, before being traded in June 2010 to the 76ers.
Since then, Hawes has averaged nearly 10 points, 7.3 rebounds, one block and 2.6 assists per game over five NBA seasons. He was hampered for more than half of the lockout-shortened 2011-12 NBA season due to injuries, although he did return in a big way in the playoffs to lead the 76ers to a first-round upset over the highly-favored Chicago Bulls.

NBA News 2012: NBA Agrees To Compromise on Bird Rights
English: Chauncey Billups (Photo credit: Wikipedia)The NBA announced today that it has reached a settlement agreement with the NBA Players Association of the recent arbitration proceeding filed on behalf of Chauncey Billups, J.J. Hickson, Jeremy Lin and Steve Novak.
Under the settlement, the union agreed to limit the scope of the ruling by arbitrator Kenneth Dam in exchange for the league’s agreement to drop its appeal. The rule will now be that players who are claimed from waivers will have the same “Early Bird” rights as if they had been traded, but will not have full “Bird” rights unless they are claimed through the league’s amnesty procedure.

NBA News 2010: Raptors Looking To Acquire An Extra Big

"With the injury to Ed Davis, there has been more talk about adding a big,” Colangelo said Thursday. “There’s a universe of bigs still out there.”

NBA News 2010: Why Can't We Be Friends: Los Angeles Lakers Sign Former Foe Matt Barnes
Image via WikipediaOn Tuesday afternoon, seventh-year swingman Matt Barnes was officially introduced as the Los Angeles Lakers' latest free agent acquisition—another one of the many magician-like moves general manager Mitch Kupchak has pulled out of his hat; this one of the discounted two-year, $3.6 million variety.The signing of Barnes cements L.A.'s last major crack on its relatively new-look roster, a roster that is expected to have as few as five new names on it when training camp commences in late September.
What's more, is it supplements the team's defensive-minded, tough-guy mentality, which allowed the Lakers to capture their second NBA championship in as many seasons just last month.
Barnes's ability to play both the shooting guard and small forward positions will alleviate the heavy load of minutes that Kobe Bryant has carried throughout his 14-year career.
The aging Ron Artest will also benefit from longer breathers, especially if he continues to pursue a secondary career in rapping.

NBA News 2010: Bobcats Keep Tyrus Thomas
Image via WikipediaBuilding off their investment of a first round pick sent to Chicago to acquire him, the Bobcats signed Tyrus Thomas to a five-year, $40 million contract.Thomas was a restricted free agent who I thought would benefit from the unique nature of the 2010 summer. This is a great deal for him financially, though it isn't the type of obscene money I once thought might be possible.
The trajectory of his career has always been one that I compare with Rudy Gay. They were both members of the 2006 Draft class and some of Gay's flaws were exposed in his sophomore season at UConn, while Thomas had a meteoric rise during his one and done run at LSU.
The numbers Thomas posted for the Bulls were never horrific by any means, typically averaging 13 points and about nine boards and at least two blocks per 36 minutes.
With the Bobcats, he played just 25 games and a total of 542 minutes, but his PER, usage and total rebound percentage were career highs.
He needs to be a finisher at the rim in order to be effective offensively, but he also needs lobs and dishes to get those, so they happen with not nearly enough frequency for how much he likes to take shots. His jumper isn't awful by any stretch, but it would be better utilized as something to offset the dunk instead of vice versa.
Defensively, Thomas is a special shotblocker and he is a top-10 player in terms of block percentage. He is typically committed to doing the non-glamorous aspects of defending and does a good job of it. He also is capable of defending both power forwards and small forwards.
He is an ideal player to bring off the bench because of his energy and the probability that he will be better than his counterpart also coming off the bench. Most teams would prefer, however, to have a player of Thomas' level of ability be on a rookie contract instead of making high seven-figures in each of the next five seasons.
Grade for Bobcats: B-
The Suns were looking for more affordable replacements to Amar'e Stoudemire this summer and I thought he would be a good fit for the team. Given the possibility of receiving one more decent sized contract when this new one is up before phasing into veteran minimum status, taking a little less money to showcase himself with an elite passing point guard might have been a prudent gamble.
Ultimately, $40 million over five seasons is a good deal for a player who was traded away because his former team preferred cap space over the risk of him taking the qualifying offer. The fact that Chicago was able to receive a future first for him, despite being so close to restricted free agency did reveal how much Charlotte liked him and the good possibility that he would be retained.

NBA News 2010: Grizzlies Max Out Rudy Gay
Image via WikipediaRudy Gay was one of the most celebrated members of the 2006 NBA Draft class, but he fell to eighth overall and was traded by the Rockets to Memphis in a deal for Shane Battier.He had a true breakout season in 07-08, his second in the NBA, but he has since struggled to improve in any meaningful way.
We knew Gay would be a beneficiary of being a restricted free agent this summer by piggy-backing off the heralded true max players in LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, etc., but few could predict his max contract would come from his incumbent team on the first day of free agency.
The strategy when dealing with your own RFAs is to stall and threaten to match anything, which handcuffs the player and his agent. It is a strategy that worked a few summers ago for the Hawks with Josh Smith and also last season with David Lee and the Knicks.
There is no conceivable benefit for the Grizzlies to offer a full max to Gay unless he was a special circumstances player such as Kevin Durant or even his draft classmate Brandon Roy.
Over the life of the extension, Gay will make $25M more than Rajon Rondo, who agreed to an extension with the Celtics several months ago before ever hitting the open market.
He is uber-athletic and won't turn 24 until August, meaning he has room to improve still and the Grizzlies have bought his entire prime with a few seasons to spare.
Gay has improved his mid-range jumper substantially since coming into the NBA, as well as his defense. On good nights, he looks like an All-Star but he still struggles with his consistency.
His PER of 16.3 ranks him about 10th amongst NBA small forwards and he's probably a little better than that. The position is fairly weak right now once you get past the holy trinity of LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony. I would put Danny Granger ahead of him as well and probably Gerald Wallace, and while Nicolas Batum might surpass him, that's a big question mark. Paul Pierce is beyond his prime obviously and I don't think Luol Deng is as good as him and is trending downwards. At the very worst, Gay is a top-8 small forward right now.
There are certain teams where Gay might be worth an $80M contract, an up-tempo team with a legitimate alpha scorer, but it is hard to see how he can be worth that much to Memphis. He is easily at his best offensively in transition, where he can use his athleticism and strong all-around game.
Max players should be All-Stars every single season and Rudy Gay is not one of those players.
Grade for Grizzlies: C-
There was an excellent chance that Gay would end up signing a max contract this summer, so credit must be given to Jeff Austin and Octagon for making it happen so swiftly.
In a few months, and particularly after the new CBA, this deal may look absolutely dreadful and he probably won't finish the contract in Memphis.
