The Charlotte Bobcats have been awarded center Brendan Haywood off waivers from Dallas.

Haywood, who grew up in Greensboro and played collegiately at North Carolina - the same alma mater as owner Michael Jordan - was cut loose by the Mavericks using the amnesty clause.

An 11-year NBA veteran, the 7-foot Haywood helps fills a void at center.

Haywood has played in 733 career games for the Wizards and Mavericks with 531 starts, averaging 7.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 23.7 minutes. His career field-goal percentage of .534 ranks seventh among active players and 28th in NBA history.

NBA News 2011: Kentucky beats North Carolina

UK Basketball logo, recreated in SVG format, u...Image via Wikipedia
Kentucky spent 13 straight springs watching other schools play in the Final Four, a destination college basketball’s winningest program considers its birthright.

At most places, that’s hardly a drought.

In the Bluegrass, it’s a lifetime.

Brandon Knight scored 22 points and fourth-seeded Kentucky advanced to the Final Four for the first time since their 1998 national title with a 76-69 win over second-seeded North Carolina on Sunday in the East Regional final.

A season after falling a game short of the Final Four behind a roster filled with future NBA stars, the Wildcats are heading to the national semifinals for the 14th time behind the heady play of Knight and Harrellson’s emotional leadership.

Harrellson again held his own against North Carolina’s bigger, more heralded front line, scoring 12 points and grabbing eight rebounds.

Tyler Zeller led North Carolina with 21 points and nine rebounds and Harrison Barnes added 18 points, but the Tar Heels fell behind early and struggled to keep the hot-shooting Wildcats in check.

NBA News 2011: North Carolina pounds Marquette

WASHINGTON - MAY 11: University of North Caro...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
North Carolina got off to its customary slow start, then seized control to move within a game of reaching the Final Four for the third time in four years.

"I looked up at the clock and it was 10-8 their favor, and the next time I looked at the clock is when I went off at halftime and it was 40-15," North Carolina coach Roy Williams said. "I knew we were doing very well to say the least."

Those 15 first-half points were the second-fewest allowed by North Carolina in a half in 144 NCAA tournament games, and the Marquette's 20 percent shooting from the field came on 6-of-30 shooting that was the second lowest by an opponent in an NCAA tournament game.

Just a year after missing the NCAA party, the kids from Chapel Hill are ready to steal the show.

Zeller had 27 points and 15 rebounds, while John Henson added 14 points and 12 rebounds for the second-seeded Tar Heels in the rout at the Prudential Center. Harrison Barnes added 20 points and six rebounds.

NBA News 2011: Kentucky eliminate No. 1 seed Ohio State

NEWARK, NJ - MARCH 25: DeAndre Liggins #34 of...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
The Kentucky freshman guard added to the Buckeyes' March misery by knocking down his second winner of the postseason, a 15-footer with 5 seconds left to lift the Wildcats to a 62-60 victory on Friday in the East regional semifinals.

Kentucky (28-8) will face North Carolina on Sunday for a trip to the Final Four.

"When it comes to crunch time, couple seconds left, the game is on the line, I just try to make good decisions," Knight said.

Regardless of how the previous 39 minutes went. Knight missed seven of his first nine shots and spent most of the night getting hounded by Ohio State counterpart Aaron Craft.

It hardly mattered in the end.

Ohio State's Jon Diebler hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 60 with 21 seconds remaining, but rather than call timeout Kentucky coach John Calipari opted to trust his players.

Knight, who knocked down a winner in Kentucky's second-round victory over Princeton, drove to his right then hit a silky 15-foot jumper.

Harrison Barnes scored 40 points in North Carolina's 92-87 win over Clemson in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament.

“He’s very analytical,’’ North Carolina coach Roy Williams said of Barnes. “He’s just bigger, faster and stronger. He never lost his focus in every practice. It just took a while to show up in his game.’’

NBA News 2011: NBA Prospect Tristan Thompson

NEW YORK - NOVEMBER 19: Tristan Thompson #13 o...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
Tristan Thompson, 6'8, Freshman, Power Forward, Texas
11.2 Points, 8 Rebounds, 1.3 Assists, 1.3 Steals, 2 Blocks, 1.8 Turnovers, 46.9% FG, 48.3% FT

One of the top freshmen in the country, former McDonald's All-American Tristian Thompson is off to a solid, albeit inconsistent start in Austin. He's put together some great single-game performances, including a 17-point, 15-rebound effort against Michigan State and a 20-point performance against Illinois, but he's struggled at times as well, as evidenced by his 6-point performance against USC and 4-point, foul plagued outing against North Carolina. An intriguing prospect with some impressive physical tools, Thompson has made his strengths and weaknesses abundantly clear early in his freshman season, supporting many of our observations from his high school career in the process.

Standing just 6'8, Thompson is a bit undersized for a power forward on the NBA level, but compensates with a tremendous 7'2 wingspan. Sporting a solid frame that looks as though it could handle quite a bit of additional muscle, the Ontario native has the athleticism to play either forward spot at the next level, but is relegated to the power forward position by his lack of perimeter skills. Taking that into consideration, it will be important for Thompson to maximize his physique by continuing to work hard in the weight room.

Thompson's athleticism plays a key role in his draft projections at this point because his skill set is still growing into his body. He does a few things very well on the offensive end, all of which revolve around the imposing quickness, length, and leaping ability he possesses for his position on the college level. First, he gets to the line at a high rate, ranking 7th in our database in FTA/FGA at 0.89 per-attempt, an incredibly impressive accomplishment for a player who lacks a polished post repertoire and great ball-handling prowess.

Second, he ranks as one of the top per-40 minute pace adjusted rebounders amongst prospects in the college game. Finally, Thompson is also a very good finisher, efficiently scoring tip in opportunities, fast break feeds, and simple catch and finish opportunities.

Apart from his ability to finish, draw contact, and crash the glass, Thompson is limited by his skill-level at this point. His awkward jump shooting mechanics make him a non-factor away from the rim and renders him as a highly questionable free throw shooter (48%) and midrange scoring threat. He's capable of making quick, decisive straight-line drives to the rim by exploiting his long strides and nice first step, but needs to become a steadier ball-handler with both hands and a better decision-maker to maximize his potential as a face-up threat.

Defensively, there is a lot to like about Thompson at this point. Maligned for his effort level at times early in his career, the Findlay Prep product is a consistently active defender at this point in his career who can adjust shots around the rim and make an impact in the passing lanes out on the perimeter.

A versatile defender on the NCAA level, Thompson's blend of length, strength, and lateral quickness allow him to defend both forward positions effectively. He doesn't change directions extremely well at this point, losing his man on double-moves on occasion, but he does deny penetration well and with additional coaching, he could match his ability to pull down rebounds at a high rate with the ability to defend the inside and outside alike.

NBA News 2011: Draft Prospect Harrison Barnes

DURHAM, NC - FEBRUARY 09: Harrison Barnes #40...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
Harrison Barnes, North Carolina
6-8, Freshman, Small Forward

The No. 1 high school prospect according to some of the most respected talent evaluators in the business, Barnes was the first freshman ever to be named to a preseason All-America team. Every NBA scout we spoke with had him No. 1 on his personal mock draft, and everyone just assumed that the Iowa native would come in and dominate the NCAA landscape like the top high school recruits seemingly always do every season.

To call Barnes' season a disappointment relative to expectations might be an understatement, as he's underachieved in virtually every facet of the game and has looked nothing like the incredibly mature, polished and versatile player we saw mesmerize onlookers numerous times at the high school level.

NBA News 2010: Draft Prospect Kyrie Irving

Harrison Barnes and Kyrie Irving at the 2010 N...Image via Wikipedia
If there is such a thing as a freshman playing flawless basketball right now, Kyrie Irving would qualify for that outlandish statement.

Productive, efficient, unselfish, exciting—there's really no shortage of ways to describe the way Irving has performed thus far. He's managed to take a NCAA Tournament championship team—ranked as the best offense in college basketball—and make them even better, acting as their main facilitator, shot-maker and go-to guy. Dominant when needed, but still deferential enough to keep all of Duke's many other options happy (thus far), Irving has fit in as seamlessly as possible, making the transition to the NCAA-level look effortless.

Irving is scoring at a terrific rate thus far, nearly 22 points per-40 minutes pace adjusted, but is doing so without the luxury of taking very many shots. He's accomplished that feat by converting efficiently inside the arc (59%), hitting his 3-pointers at a blistering 45% clip, and getting to the free throw line over 8-times per-40. There really isn't much more you can ask for besides that, especially considering that he's only eight games into his college career.

NBA News 2010: NBA Prospect Harrison Barnes

Harrison Barnes, 6-8, 209 pounds, 7-0 ½ wingspan, Class of 2010

Considering his status as the number one recruit in the country according to both Scout.com and ESPN (#2 on Rivals after Brandon Knight), Barnes is long overdue for a write-up on this site, despite the fact that he’s two years away from being draft eligible.

Showing prototypical physical tools for an NBA wing player, including excellent size, length and a frame that will fill out nicely in time, Barnes passes the look test and then some on first glance. Maybe not as freakish an athlete as some former #1 overall recruits, Barnes is still no slouch in that category, showing excellent fluidity and overall mobility, to compliment his excellent scoring tools.

Still an improving ball-handler, Barnes is already able to get to where he needs to on the floor thanks to the shiftiness he shows with the ball, combined with his long strides and ability to change directions quickly. He did a good job creating shots for himself in the mid-range area, and was able to convert some extremely difficult shots thanks to his excellent touch. From the perimeter he has a nice stroke and clearly possesses 3-point range, but he seemed to get a bit streaky from time to time.

Not afraid of contact in the least bit, Barnes showed no qualms about utilizing his size inside the paint by posting up the very highly touted Dashaun Thomas time after time. He was incredibly active on the offensive glass as well, making an absolute living by being the first player going after loose balls, showing an impressive work ethic in the process.

NBA News 2010: Knicks Sign Felton, Mozgov

Raymond Felton playing defense against Rodney ...Image via WikipediaUsing cap space to sign Raymond Felton and Timofey Mozgov was not what anyone had in mind when the Knicks began clearing cap space in November and 2008 and it certainly was not the desired objective when they mortgaged a good portion of their future to create enough cap space for a second max contract slot.
But I've long been on record as supporting the decision of Donnie Walsh to gamble heavily on 2010, as even a 10% chance at LeBron James was clearly worth it.
Furthermore, at least the Knicks did sign Amar'e Stoudemire instead of Tyrus Thomas or Hakim Warrick with that massive amount of cap space.
Felton is at his best when he is able to get out in transition and in the pick-and-roll. Those of course are two of the main job requirements of a Seven Seconds or Less point guard. While with the Bobcats, Felton didn't receive too many of these opportunities in a slowpaced system.
He is capable of shooting the ball well from the perimeter, but he is absolutely streaky. Felton had a career best three-point percentage in 09-10 of 38.5%, up from two consecutive seasons below 30%. He came into the league shooting 35.8% with a larger sample size, but obviously struggled in maintaining its reliability. Felton's shot was something that wasn't a key strength coming out of North Carolina, but it was surprisingly better than expected once scouts were able to take a look in workouts.
I don't think Felton is suddenly going to become the next Steve Nash by coming into this system, but he undoubtedly will be a more valuable and productive player for the Knicks than he ever was for Charlotte.
Grade for Knicks on Felton: A-
If I were Felton, I would have been far more eager to secure a long-term deal given the free-wheeling climate the uncertainty of the CBA. If there is a certain kind of player that gets squeezed after the players and owners finally settle on a new deal, it will be personified by a middle of the road guy like Felton. A full MLE type of deal from another team would have paid less on an annual basis, but at least it would guarantee $34M over the next five years. The decision to accept just $14.56M puts a lot of strain on that summer of 2012 for Felton since that kind of money falls a little short of setting him up and everyone he cares about for life.
With that said, Felton now has the opportunity to prove himself to be more than just an average starting point guard in a system that showcases point guards. He could play his way into a five or six-year extension at $10M or so annually in 2012 while he's still just 28.
Grade for Felton: B
The Mozgov signing is obviously an interesting futures bet, as 7'1" guys with some agility and pure skill don't exactly grow on trees. I've never seen him in regular game action, but I watched just under 100 individual clips of him.
The biggest thing for him is if he is able to create some space for himself, as he looks pretty good in those instances. Mozgov has decent touch and lift to the bucket, but far too many of his attempts are capable of getting blocked with how he puts the ball out in front of himself. He's unafraid of being physical when posting up for position, but he tends to get a little soft upon the catch.
His hands are decent and his presence on the weakside will lead to some easy dishes after a double-team on Amar'e Stoudemire, as well as put backs. Mozgov is also fully capable of running the pick-and-roll, but he needs to receive the ball within four or five feet of the bucket.
Grade for Knicks on Mozgov: A
Mozgov's NBA career may quickly stop soon after it starts because of the potential work stoppage, but he at least will have a full season to prove himself against NBA competition. He also has the luxury of playing in a system that suits him where he is guaranteed playing time for a team with low expectations for the position.
Grade for Mozgov: A-
