NBA News 2011: Oden Factor

Greg Oden promotes literacy and the manga &quo...Image via Wikipedia
When the Portland Trail Blazers selected Greg Oden with the first overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, it was widely believed that he would be the final foundational piece to a team that would compete for championships for years to come. All-Star Brandon Roy was already turning heads and LaMarcus Aldridge was showing promise, as well. The Blazers had their big three and they were ready to make some serious noise in the Western Conference.

Still, the Blazers remain hopeful that at some point Oden will be able to take the court once again, and that he can be the center solution that they, like so many other teams, have struggled to find.

"We're hoping that Greg can come back and be that for us," Blazers GM Rich Cho tells HOOPSWORLD. "I think if you can have a dominant center like Dwight Howard or Yao Ming before he got hurt or maybe Bynum or Greg Oden when he was healthy, it gives you a lot more of an advantage up front. There's not a lot of those guys around, so if you can find one it gives you more of an advantage."

The Blazers may not have Greg Oden anchoring the middle and Brandon Roy has struggled to play through his injuries, as well, but the growth of LaMarcus Aldridge and the addition of Gerald Wallace got them back into the playoffs. The first two games of their first round series were extremely competitive, and rest assured the Blazers will give Dallas a fight now that the series resumes in Portland. Every team has setbacks, and the Blazers have had more than their share, but they're fighting through and looking to come out stronger on the other side.

NBA News 2011: Top 5 Playoff-Ready Lottery Teams

Bucks logo from 2006–presentImage via Wikipedia
This is a great time of year to be an NBA fan.  The playoffs are in full swing, teams are surprising us with unbelievable postseason play, and fans in arenas have kicked up the energy about a thousand notches.  The playoffs are so fantastic because there's so much at stake, and sixteen teams are fighting their rear ends off for a shot at the NBA title.

So yeah, it's a great time of year… for those 16 teams.

That leaves 14 teams (and by association, 14 fan bases) with little to look forward to until the draft in late June, but let's remind ourselves which of those 14 lottery teams are still worth talking about.  Some of these organizations aren't far from the playoffs; they've either got the players to make a real run at it right now, or they've got a young core right on the cusp of blowing up.  Today's Top 5 looks at the non-playoff teams who are most likely to get into the playoffs next spring.  In descending order, here they are:

#5 – L.A. Clippers
#4 – Utah Jazz
#3 – Golden State Warriors
#2 – New Jersey Nets
#1 – Milwaukee Bucks

NBA News 2011: Marc Gasol Off The Market?

NEW ORLEANS - MARCH 03: Zach Randolph #50, Mi...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
The Grizzlies are finally stepping up to the plate, first by overpaying Rudy Gay to make sure he stayed in town, and more recently by inking Zach Randolph to a contract extension. Randolph was understandably concerned about what the might be on the horizon for his team before he committed the bulk of his prime to Memphis, and he liked what he heard. First and foremost, his front court mate - Marc Gasol - is expected to be re-signed, as well.

"It feels good to know I'm going to be in Memphis for another four years. It feels real good. A little bit at the beginning of the year I was distracted by it (the lack of a new contract). I put it out of my mind about halfway through the season. I haven't been thinking about it lately until now. I'm glad that it's done and I'm staying here. But I definitely want Marc here with us."

It is precisely the front court pairing of Randolph and Gasol that has made Memphis a tough customer all season. Even as they've dealt with injuries at other positions, the fact that they have two big men who patrol the paint and puts points and rebounds on the board in bunches has helped them stay in the playoff chase. The two combined for 49 points and 23 rebounds in Game 1 in San Antonio, which the Grizzlies won 101-98.

Boxing News 2011: Ortiz upsets Berto

Victor Ortiz media workout on June 24, 2009 at...Image via WikipediaVictor Ortiz got some advice from Manny Pacquiao before his title fight against unbeaten Andre Berto.

“Manny told me to stick to my game plan,” Ortiz said.

Ortiz listened to boxing’s biggest star and the result was three knockdowns in an upset victory over Berto in a World Boxing Council welterweight title fight Saturday night.

Ortiz (29-2-2) won a unanimous decision despite having a point taken away for hitting behind the head. The three judges scored it 114-112, 114-111 and 115-110.

Berto (27-1) was nearly knocked out in the first round against Ortiz, who came out firing combinations from the bell, stunning the champion with a right hand followed by a left hook that put him on the canvas.

With Berto clearly dazed, Ortiz tried to finish his rival off. He produced another knockdown, but Berto made it out of the round.

“I noticed he was vulnerable on the inside,” Ortiz said. “Part of my game plan was to smother his shots and overwhelm him.”

Boxing News 2011: Khan wins on points

Amir Khan champion Boxer and future boxing leg...Image via Wikipedia
Amir Khan retained his WBA light welterweight title on points after Paul McCloskey was stopped by the referee in the sixth round because of a nasty cut over his left eye on Saturday.

Referee Luiz Pabon deemed the cut to have come from an accidental clash of heads, and summoned ringside doctor Phil Sahu, who believed McCloskey couldn’t continue with blood seeping into his eye and impairing his vision.

All three judges had Khan leading 60-54 halfway through the scheduled 12-round bout, and the Englishman improved to 25-1 with 17 knockouts.

Khan started patiently against the challenger’s rangy southpaw style. But Khan landed a big right at the start of the second that visibly shook McCloskey, who recovered with a few shots of his own by the end of the round.

NBA News 2011: Oriakhi’s lifts UConn

2003–04 Connecticut Huskies men's basketball teamImage via Wikipedia
The Huskies held Butler to 12 field goals—the second-fewest in title game history—and just two points in the paint while blocking 10 shots and altering numerous others. The Bulldogs set a record for futility, making just 19 percent of their shots.

“I definitely think we got in their head,” said Oriakhi, who shook off first-half foul trouble to finish with 11 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks. “They were second-guessing shots they were taking and if we didn’t block it we were able to alter it. I definitely think it frustrated them and we got them out of their comfort zone.”

It certainly looked that way.

The hulking 6-foot-9 Oriakhi and the rest of UConn’s muscular and long front line disrupted Butler’s timing and shook the Bulldogs’ confidence.

NBA News 2011: UConn win over Kentucky

Jim Calhoun, head basketball coach, University...Image via Wikipedia
hen the options boil down to winning or heading home, nobody’s better than Kemba and Connecticut.

Kemba Walker scored 18 points Saturday night to lift UConn to its 10th straight victory since finishing off a .500 Big East regular season, a 56-55 win over cold-shooting Kentucky that moved the Huskies a victory away from their third, and most improbable, NCAA title.

The third-seeded Huskies—lowest seed left in a tournament that has been as unpredictable as any in history—will face No. 8 Butler, a 70-62 winner over 11th-seeded VCU in the first semifinal, on Monday.

“The guys decided they didn’t want to go home; this is too much fun,” UConn coach Jim Calhoun said.

But this win, which improved Calhoun to 5-1 in his four Final Four appearances, was not a work of art on either end.

NBA News 2011: Butler back to national title game

Butler University athletics logoImage via Wikipedia
“We’re not going to settle on just getting back,” said Zach Hahn, who came up big off the bench in Butler’s 70-62 victory over VCU on Saturday night that gave the Bulldogs a do-over and ended the warm-and-fuzzy story of this year’s NCAA men’s tournament.

“I remember the sour taste it left in my mouth last year, and I just think this group, we’re here now and we have a chance. That’s all you can ask.”

Shelvin Mack scored 24 points, Hahn scored all eight of his points during a 90-second span in the second half that gave Butler control of the game for good and the Bulldogs shut down hot-shooting VCU with their trademark unforgiving defense. The eighth-seeded Bulldogs (28-9) will face Connecticut on Monday night, the lowest-seeded team to play for the national title since Villanova won it as a No. 8 seed in 1985.

“We’ve just got to be one shot better than last year,” coach Brad Stevens said.
