NBA News 2013: Cavaliers ready to make Greg Oden multi-year contract offer

Why would Cleveland entertain a multi-year offer for a player who hasn’t stepped foot on an NBA court in more than three years? Good question. Positionally, there is a need. Big man Anderson Varejao has been struck by injuries in recent years and the only other center on the roster is rookie Tyler Zeller. The Cavaliers are armed with cap space and are clearly in a rebuilding mode; taking a flier on a big man with potential, even if he’s a long shot, is a nothing-to-lose proposition. Signing him soon would allow the Cavaliers to guide his rehabilitation and prepare him for next season; a team option for the third year would give them flexibility to cut bait if it didn’t work out or retain their asset if it did. All it really costs Cleveland is a roster spot.

Still, there are plenty of reasons to be skeptical of an Oden comeback: he was never consistently healthy during his four-plus seasons in Portland, microfracture surgeries are major surgeries, and he developed blood clots in his left ankle that were considered serious enough to delay his February 2012 surgery. Most damning, Blazers executives admitted following his latest surgeries that Oden was never cleared for full-contact, five-on-five play at any point following his 2009 fractured patella and that significant swelling and pain prevented him from advancing in his rehabilitation work. It’s admirable that he’s still pursuing a comeback after years of setbacks but any optimism regarding his future contributions needs to be couched in between thick layers of caution.

NBA News 2013: Cavs, HEAT Front Runners to Land Oden?

The Cleveland Cavaliers and the Miami Heat have emerged as the leaders to land former No. 1 pick Greg Oden.

The 7-foot Oden, who hasn’t played since Dec. 5, 2009 due to multiple knee injuries, is hoping to take a visit down to Miami to meet with Pat Riley and the Heat in the next week, a source told CBSSports.com.

Miami would likely offer a deal for minimum salary while the Cavs could pay up to nearly $4 million. The Boston Celtics are another team that has expressed interest, but the source said that Oden is leaning towards making a comeback with either Cleveland or Miami.

NBA News 2011: Oden Factor

When the Portland Trail Blazers selected Greg Oden with the first overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, it was widely believed that he would be the final foundational piece to a team that would compete for championships for years to come. All-Star Brandon Roy was already turning heads and LaMarcus Aldridge was showing promise, as well. The Blazers had their big three and they were ready to make some serious noise in the Western Conference.

Still, the Blazers remain hopeful that at some point Oden will be able to take the court once again, and that he can be the center solution that they, like so many other teams, have struggled to find.

"We're hoping that Greg can come back and be that for us," Blazers GM Rich Cho tells HOOPSWORLD. "I think if you can have a dominant center like Dwight Howard or Yao Ming before he got hurt or maybe Bynum or Greg Oden when he was healthy, it gives you a lot more of an advantage up front. There's not a lot of those guys around, so if you can find one it gives you more of an advantage."

The Blazers may not have Greg Oden anchoring the middle and Brandon Roy has struggled to play through his injuries, as well, but the growth of LaMarcus Aldridge and the addition of Gerald Wallace got them back into the playoffs. The first two games of their first round series were extremely competitive, and rest assured the Blazers will give Dallas a fight now that the series resumes in Portland. Every team has setbacks, and the Blazers have had more than their share, but they're fighting through and looking to come out stronger on the other side.

NBA News 2010: Why Greg Oden Will Be One of the Best 5 Centers in the League

Greg OdenImage by Buou via Flickr
In 2007, with the No.1 draft pick, the Portland Trail Blazers chose a stud on defense named Greg Oden who was expected to use his size, athleticism and skills to dominate on defense in order to make his team a title contender.

To this point, Oden has shown that he can be what the Blazers need him to be, but his health is the biggest concern for their center's and franchise's future in this very competitive league.

What's impressive about Oden is, not only that he can contest shots in the paint and clean the glass, but he also can bottle his man while helping out his teammates since he is a terrific one-on-one defender in the post. He has held Timmy, Noah, Marc Gasol and Jefferson to very bad shooting days.

Offensively, he has a short arsenal of moves to be considered as a threat which can score 30+ against few opponents, but he has a nice hook shot with either hand, he can finish strong with a dunk, he can lay up and with his size, he's tough to guard.

NBA News 2010: Which team is the strongest Western Conference challenger?

Greg Oden promotes literacy and the manga &quo...Image via Wikipedia
Which Western Conference team has the best chance to beat the Lakers in a seven-game series?

The Results:

Oklahoma City- 5.5 votes
Portland- 3.5 votes
Dallas- 2 votes
Houston- 1 vote, but a lot of love as a serious dark horse
Nobody- 1 vote

My Take: Two teams -- Oklahoma City and Portland -- stand out. Both have the ability to make life difficult for the Lakers. A healthy Blazers team has backcourt strength (Brandon Roy), a stong wing defender (Nicolas Batum) and frontcourt depth (Greg Oden, LaMarcus Aldridge, Marcus Camby, plus Joel Przybilla, if he recovers from knee surgery). We saw last season what OKC was capable of, and if the Thunder get decent play from Cole Aldrich and more development from Serge Ibaka (thus beefing up the frontcourt), I'll give them the slightest of edges over Portland, probably because it's hard for me to picture a healthy Portland team.

NBA News 2010: How Many Games Will Greg Oden Play for the Blazers?

Greg Oden playing with the Portland Trail BlazersImage via Wikipedia
In three seasons since being selected, out of a possible 246 games, Oden has appeared in 82 of them. The player selected after Oden in the 2007 draft, Kevin Durant, just became the youngest scoring champion in NBA history this past season

Suffice it to say, Portland wasn't banking on drafting a player who'd play one full season out of three when they spent the No. 1 pick on Oden. If he can get back on the court and stay healthy all season, he could finally become the force that made him the No. 1 pick; otherwise, if injuries intervene yet again, the Blazers may finally decide that Oden's body simply can't handle the rigors of being an NBA starter.
