NBA News 2013: Tyson Chandler loses bet to Melo

Tyson Chandler may have etched his name in the Knicks’ record books on Monday with his third straight 20-rebound game, but it wasn’t all good for the Knicks’ center.

Chandler, a 49ers fan, lost a bet with Carmelo Anthony, a Baltimore Ravens fan, after Baltimore beat San Francisco in Super Bowl XLVII on Sunday.

The result? Chandler had to wear a Ravens hat during postgame interviews on Monday.

“This is not my team, this is Carmelo’s team. But they won, so congratulations to the Ravens and all their fans,” Chandler begrudgingly said at the begging of his post-game interview.

“That made my day, you just don’t know,” Anthony said.

The fantasy hoops season doesn't start for another four months, but for many fantasy owners, the preparations began with Thursday's NBA draft. Four months might seem like a lifetime away right now, but the fantasy season is going to creep up on us rather quickly.

NBA News 2011: Kendrick Perkins: I don't like Chandler

A cropped version of File:Tyson Chandler.jpg d...Image via Wikipedia
Oklahoma City 's Perkins has an opposing opinion about his rivalry with Chandler.

"Me and Tyson never got along. I'm serious," said Perkins, whom the Thunder acquired in a trade deadline deal with the Boston Celtics. "He don't like me, I don't like him and that's pretty much how it's been. Everybody always looks at me as kind of like a dirty player if you're on the opposite team, but he's just as dirty as anybody else."

The double technicals occurred after Perkins got in Chandler's face after a play. Chandler raised both arms in the air and said he did nothing to earn a T -- the NBA rescinded it on Wednesday -- but he understands that the officials wanted to make sure they kept control of the game.

NBA News 2011: San Antonio Spurs Against Mavericks

Dallas Mavericks vs San antonio spursImage by joeduty via Flickr
Record against Dallas: 2-1

Games left: 1

This will be a great match up, simply great.

There is history and as of now Dallas still holds the second seed which in theory makes them the second best team in the Conference.

The matchup also has a great matchup in Dirk Nowitzki vs. Tim Duncan.

However, in the end it will come down to the depth of the Spurs vs. the depth of the Mavericks.

Believe it or not, in my opinion the Mavs have a slight edge here especially after their players return from various injuries.

This is going to be a tough matchup, but I think that in a seven game series the Dallas Mavericks can beat the San Antonio Spurs.

NBA News 2010: Mavericks owner Mark Cuban: Hell yes, we can beat the Lakers

WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA - NOVEMBER 29: (FILE PHOTO...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban spoke to KRLD in Dallas recently. He predicts another 50-win season and also spoke about the perception that he was trying to take the Texas Rangers away from Nolan Ryan.

Some highlights as transcribed by sportsradiointerviews.

On if the Mavs can beat the Lakers:

"Hell yes. That's it. Hell yes. We've got the size now. We've got the depth. We've got a lot more depth than the Lakers. It's not even close there."

On expectations on the Mavs after nine straight 50-win seasons:

"I'm excited about it. We're going to continue our streak. We're going to have a great team. I think we have the depth, experience and are younger and more athletic to kind of fill some holes we had last year. We are going to be better... This is a really, really special opportunity for us. We're going to have the deepest team in the NBA by far. I think our second unit, J.J. (Barea), Jet (Rodigue Beaubois) and probably Shawn Marion or Caron Butler switching back and forth with the second unit with rookie Dominique Jones playing the three, Tyson Chandler playing the four and Brendan (Haywood) or Ian (Mahini) playing the five. Our second unit could beat a lot of first units. We're going to have so much depth that it's really going to give us an advantage this year. All our guys are coming in with one focus only and that's to win a championship. That's the goal. "

NBA News 2010: Erick Dampier free to sign with any team

Erick DampierImage via Wikipedia
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Unable to swing a trade, the Charlotte Bobcats waived center Erick Dampier on Tuesday, voiding one of the NBA's most unique contracts and avoiding the dreaded luxury tax.

Dampier was in the last year of a seven-year, $73 million deal, but the $13 million for this season wasn't guaranteed because he failed to meet playing time requirements.

The Michael Jordan-owned Bobcats, desperate to get their payroll under the luxury tax threshold of $70.3 million, traded center Tyson Chandler to Dallas in July in a five-player trade that included Dampier's contract.

At first, Charlotte wasn't content in just waiving Dampier to clear cap room. Starting Monday, it could've packaged Dampier's contract in a multiplayer deal, possibly for a needed point guard. But the Bobcats found no takers in a deal that also would have kept Charlotte below the luxury tax.

NBA News 2010: US beats Greece 87-59 in last game before worlds

Coaches Bob Knight and Mike Krzyzewski at the ...Image via WikipediaATHENS, Greece (AP)—The United States breezed to one last warm-up victory before the start of the world basketball championships, not that coach Mike Krzyzewski seemed to care.
He’s just happy that his group brimming with youthful exuberance is ready to play.
“The score doesn’t really matter, it was just an exhibition game,” Krzyzewski said after an 87-59 blowout of defending silver medalist Greece on Wednesday. “I’m happy we had the chance to play a great team, in a great atmosphere.”
Eric Gordon(notes) scored 18 points for the Americans, who led from start to finish against a Greece team playing for the first time since a brawl near the end of a game against Serbia turned the focus of the upcoming world championships away from the court.
The smaller Americans took advantage, even with Tyson Chandler(notes) in foul trouble. Kevin Love(notes) played well in the second half and finished with eight points and a team-high 13 rebounds.
In addition to Gordon, Love and Odom, the final 12-man roster for the U.S. includes: Kevin Durant(notes), Derrick Rose(notes), Rudy Gay(notes), Chauncey Billups(notes), Danny Granger(notes), Russell Westbrook(notes), Stephen Curry(notes) and Andre Iguodala(notes). Celtics guard Rajon Rondo(notes) pre-empted Krzyzewski’s decision about the final roster cut Tuesday by taking himself out of contention citing family reasons.
Krzyzewski denied there was any friction with Rondo.
“We respect his decision and we appreciate his total commitment to the team. Rajon is a classy person,” Krzyzewski said. “He is still in the pool of players we will consider for the (2012) London Olympics.”

NBA News 2010: Learning experience for Team USA

BOSTON - MAY 28: Chauncey Billups #1 of the D...Image by Getty Images via @daylifeMADRID, Spain -- Safe to say Team USA is not going to have to worry about peaking too early.
After one of the worst quarters ever played by a senior U.S. national team -- a seven-point first quarter in which it missed 18 of 21 shots and even went just 2-for-3 on dunks, Team USA righted itself in the second half of a 77-61 victory over Lithuania on Saturday night that will go down as exactly the learning experience this inexperienced team needed.
Rock-hard, slippery ball? Check.
Brand new logos on the court that made the playing surface not just slippery, but outright dangerous? Check.
A level of physicality more common to UFC than the NBA? Check.
All in all, a reality check.
"I would rather have it started like it started," Chauncey Billups said. "We couldn't have played any worse.
"I would rather start like that and have to fight and have to grind and scratch and claw your way back in the game, as opposed to coming put on fire and getting a false sense of where we're at right now. So it was a good lesson we had to learn."
Indeed, with a roster that is not only short on size, but short on international experience, this was probably the best thing that could have happened to Team USA -- as painful as it was to sit through it in person, or to watch it on TV back in the States.
The Americans played a slow tempo and didn't run a single pick-and-roll in the first quarter. They were repeatedly burned by backdoor cuts. They struggled in the halfcourt when they went up against a zone. The missed a third of their free throws. There were countless missed box-outs.
To say they looked ordinary would be to give them an undeserved compliment.
Led by Rudy Gay (14 points) and Russell Westbrook (12 points on 4-of-5 shooting), the bench scored 48 of the 77 points and vastly outperformed a starting five comprised of Kevin Durant (0-for-4 on 3s), Rajon Rondo (1-for-4, two points, one assist, four turnovers), Andre Iguodala (2-for-5, five points), Chauncey Billups (1-for-4 at the line, seven pts, no assists, four turnovers) and Tyson Chandler (0 points, five rebounds in 22 minutes).

NBA News 2010: Mavericks Use EDNGC For Chandler

A cropped version of File:Tyson Chandler.jpg d...Image via WikipediaLike so many teams (outside of the Heat) who entered the summer of 2010, the Mavericks had ambitious hopes for how they would use the non-guaranteed contract of Erick Dampier. I'm sure Tyson Chandler wasn't amongst their top-10 choices for how to use the trade chip, but he undoubtedly becomes another strong piece on an already deep team.
The Mavericks also approached an advanced stage of trade discussions with the Wolves on Al Jefferson, but David Kahn received two first round picks from Utah and he did not have to take back any bad contracts that Dallas had hoped for. So Chandler became the less costly alternative for the Mavericks since they unloaded Eduardo Najera and Matt Carroll in the process, while also acquiring young project center Alexis Ajinca.
The fundamental problem with the Dallas strategy of using the Dampier non-guaranteed contract (EDNGC for short) was the somewhat unforeseen flood of traded player exceptions to hit the market. We knew there was a good chance that Toronto would acquire one by doing a sign-and-trade involving Chris Bosh, but we expected Cleveland to stubbornly decline participation involving LeBron James. The Jazz and Suns also received TPEs from the Bulls and Knicks for Carlos Boozer and Amar'e Stoudemire.
Leaving that as an aside, what are the Mavericks gaining in Chandler?
Chandler is approaching 28 and has become increasingly fragile physically in his late 20s. He also has been traded twice without actually being all the way traded. First, he was dealt to Oklahoma City in February of 2009, only to have it rescinded after a physical. More recently, he was told by the Bobcats that he would be dealt to Toronto, only to have Michael Jordan kill it at the last minute.
Chandler's PER dropped from his career highs of 17.0 and 17.5 in 06-07 and 07-08 down to 13.4 and 12.5 in each of the past two seasons. The most recent PER was especially problematic since his minutes per game dropped to 22.8 and efficiency should generally rise when playing fewer minutes.
The major reason for the decline has been his rapid and substantial drop on the glass. Chandler's rebound percentage was 20.7% and 19.5% during the successful two-year run and just 16.4% and 16.6% in each of the past two seasons. He has been banged up and rebounding is where we do begin to see the early stages of physical decline, or injury.
Chander did, however, have a career high in TS% at 64.3%, but his eFG% remained far lower than the 62.4%/62.3% of a couple years ago. The TS% increase was due to his sudden elevation of his free throw shooting.
While with the Bobcats, the vast majority of his offense came on the offensive glass and on cuts. Chandler has always been efficient with put backs, but his offensive rebound rate will need to get back to where it was originally in New Orleans to make a real impact for the Mavericks. He was once a dangerous pick-and-roll threat, but that hasn't returned since his injury and he was never very good in the post to begin with.
Defensively, he has suffered some slippage as well, but he'll still block his shots here and there. His block rate in 09-10 was less than some of his peaks, but it was his highest rate since 06-07. He is not the best post defender and struggles against his own man in the pick-and-roll, but at the very least he's a long body that can stand eye-to-eye against Gasol and Andrew Bynum.
Grade for Mavericks: B
The Bobcats were appearing likely to trade Chandler and Boris Diaw to the Raptors for Jose Calderon and Reggie Evans, but again went with this trade of pure spare parts. Charlotte receives some savings in the first year, but they weren't over the luxury tax, so it is difficult to understand the impetus.
Grade for Bobcats: C+

NBA News 2010: Sixers Draft Preview (2nd Overall Pick)

Evan Turner dunksImage via WikipediaPicks Owned: 2nd
Areas Of Need
I believe the Sixers are in most dire need of a wing player who can actually shoot it from the wing and is more of a pure basketball player, rather than a tall athlete that happens to play basketball, which I believe accurately describes Andre Iguodala and Thaddeus Young. Both Iguodala and Young have been asked to do specific things that do not fit their core competencies and it has impaired their own individual production and of course that of the team in general.
Draft Targets
Evan Turner is the closest player that fits the above description of a wing who is a pure basketball player, but I also don't believe he has All-Star potential. Drafting Turner and rearranging some of the spare pieces such as Young makes the Sixers a team that should consistently at least reach the playoffs.
Turner will be a good NBA scorer; he may have to work twice as hard as some of the more athletic wings, but he will get his points in at least a somewhat efficient manner. He also will be a good secondary ballhandler to complement Jrue Holiday in transition, plus he can run the point position when Lou Williams is on the floor. Williams is excellent instant offense off the bench, but he has consistently proven unfit to run the point in a true manner.
Derrick Favors is a bigger gamble since he needs far more development in order to become an effective big, but his potential to be big enough to play center with the Dwight Howard measurement comparisons is difficult to ignore. He has immensely more upside and I believe that is what having a pick so high should be ultimately about, finding true franchise changers.
DeMarcus Cousins has the best potential of this trio, but I'm not sure the Sixers can afford the inherent risk he would bring.
Draft History
  • 2009: Jrue Holiday, 17th
  • 2008: Marreese Speights, 16th
  • 2007: Thaddeus Young, 12th / Jason Smith, 20th
  • 2006: Rodney Carney, 16th
  • 2005: Louis Williams, 45th
  • 2004: Andre Iguodala, 9th
  • 2003: No first round pick
  • 2002: John Salmons, 26th
  • 2001: Samuel Dalembert, 26th
  • 2000: Speedy Claxton, 20th
*Only notable second round picks listed
I have been a huge fan of what Ed Stefanski has done in each of the past two drafts in the late teens by grabbing two players that dropped far lower than I had them ranked in terms of overall prospects. Holiday had a very encouraging rookie season at point guard where it looks like he will be Philadelphia's starter there for the next decade.
History of the 2nd Overall Pick
  • 2009: Hasheem Thabeet, Grizzlies, 12.9
  • 2008: Michael Beasley, Heat, 16.6
  • 2007: Kevin Durant, Thunder, 21.2
  • 2006: LaMarcus Aldridge, Blazers, 18.4
  • 2005: Marvin Williams, Hawks, 13.6
  • 2004: Emeka Okafor, Bobcats, 17.5
  • 2003: Darko Milicic, Pistons, 12.6
  • 2002: Jay Williams, Bulls, 12.2
  • 2001: Tyson Chandler, Bulls, 15.1
  • 2000: Stromile Swift, Grizzlies, 16.1
Average career PER: 14.4
