NBA News 2013: Howard Could Have Missed Entire Season?

Did Dwight Howard rush back into the Lakers’ lineup?

He had back surgery last April, was traded to the Lakers in August and started his comeback by playing two exhibitions in October. He tried not to second-guess it Tuesday a few hours before his 55th regular-season game.

“Looking back on it, I could have sat out the whole season until now and starting playing now, but I just felt like we had such a great opportunity,” he said. “Some of these guys, their windows for winning are very small, and I just wanted to get back and try to do whatever I can to help this team, knowing that I wasn’t in great shape. My body wasn’t all the way there yet.”

NBA News 2011: NBA Prospect Travis Leslie

Travis Leslie, 6'4, Junior, Small Forward, Georgia
14.5 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.9 turnovers, 1.4 Steals, 51.6% FG, 16.7% 3P, 83.1% FT

When we last checked in on Travis Leslie back in the preseason, we had lofty expectations for the rising junior. Teaming with Trey Thompkins to form a potent combination in Georgia's frontcourt, Leslie seemed ready to take the next step as a NBA prospect. Though he's helped Georgia to a 13-4 record, we have yet to see the gigantic leap forward that would propel his stock up draft boards and solidify his candidacy for the 2011 draft.

One of the more unique prospects around, Travis Leslie could easily be called the best athlete in college basketball. He plays way above the rim whenever he has a chance to and does so effortlessly, despite standing just 6'4. Extremely strong and possessing elite explosiveness, Leslie is still the same largely raw forward in an undersized two's body that we wrote about last season.

Able to play significantly bigger than his 6'4 height, Leslie's most notable development this season lies in the way he's able to score inside the arc. Often struggling to get all the way to the rim as freshman, but doing a much better job going up strong around the basket last season, the Georgia native has developed an improved comfort level and slightly better touch in the paint this season. According to Synergy Sports Technology, he's shooting 58% in finishing situations this season. Accounting for more than half of his shots both this and last season, that's a significant improvement over the 50% he shot last year. At this point, he's backing up his one or two highlight reel dunks every game with rock solid efficiency, even if he's not getting to the free throw line quite as often as he did in the past.

NBA News 2010: A slow start for Andrew Bynum is no problem for the Lakers

Andrew Bynum shoots a free throw in a playoff ...Image via Wikipedia
This week Plaschke jumped all over Andrew Bynum.

He's been down on the 22-year-old kid since Bynum was a teenager. He was also a Frank McCourt supporter, but I digress.

He thinks the Lakers should trade Bynum. Any chance he gets to drive that point home, he does.

"Different season, same story, the Lakers big man comes up small," wrote Plaschke.

That's one thing I will never understand. I have no idea why sports columnists have to be so negative.

I believe the Lakers are lucky to have Bynum. I hear Phil Jackson talk about the value of a big body all the time. I'd like to think on occasion he's talking about a sportswriter 40 pounds too heavy, but I know better.

As for the slow start Bynum is going to have this season, isn't the kid following the lead of his elders? The regular season has never meant much to Jackson or the players.

You think the Lakers have any intent of hanging with the Heat to secure the home-court advantage throughout the playoffs?

Let me help you: No.

Every year the Lakers have the talent to win almost every game and yet every year they pace themselves. And that's with Jackson's approval.

He talks about it all the time. When the Bulls won 72 games, it was the players who went after it — almost defying Jackson's wishes.

NBA News 2010: Portland Trail Blazers 2010-2011 Preview

Brandon Roy during Draft Week 2006.Image via Wikipedia
Top Offensive Player: Brandon Roy

Top Defensive Player: Marcus Camby

Top Playmaker: Brandon Roy

Top Clutch Player: Brandon Roy

The Unheralded Player: Andre Miller

Best New Addition: Wesley Matthews

Strengths

Last season Portland, on average, outscored, outrebounded, and out-everythinged their opponents. They are a team that knows what it is they want to accomplish and usually everyone knows their role and is effective in their assignments. The bench is capable and showed last season they can weather a few injuries. The roster may have changed a bit over the offseason, but the message delivered by the coaching staff – completely new under McMillan – is not going to change. This is a team who knows how to win games and feels they have made the necessary tweaks to carry that over into the playoffs.

Weaknesses

The biggest issue with the Blazers is their offense is methodical and predictable. Defenses know everything runs through Roy. This is effective despite that knowledge in the regular season because teams simply don't have the time to dedicate game planning of a single team in the days between games like they do in the playoffs – hence Portland's first-round exits the last two seasons when they seemed to be taken out of their game. The Blazers need to introduce more dynamicism into the playcalling to keep teams off balance. Part of that is finding another clutch player, part of that is staying healthy – something else that could be called a Portland weakness.

How soon will Oden and Przybilla make contributions?

Both centers can be dominating rebounders and defenders. Oden can be a force offensively, as he was starting to really show before the patella injury. However, the injuries will keep them out of some (Oden) or all (Przybilla) of training camp, which means when they do come back conditioning could be an issue along with getting back into the flow of the game. If both are healthy and contributing by mid-season, the second half could feature a Portland team surging towards the playoffs. If they struggle even when the pair is healthy enough to play, the Blazers could face another first-round playoff exit.

NBA News 2010: Who'll Be the MVP? Can LeBron Complete The Three-Peat?

LeBron JamesImage by Keith Allison via Flickr
LeBron James, two-time defending MVP, would have entered the season as the runaway favorite for a MVP three-peat had he stayed in Cleveland this summer. However, by deciding to join two uber-talented teammates in Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, logic stands to say that the opportunities for each individual player will decrease.

Currently, Bodog.com has Durant leading the preseason MVP race at 5/2 odds, then Bryant at 3/1 odds, James at 9/2 odds, Dwight Howard with 13/2 odds, and D-Wade in fifth place at 9/1 odds. Deron Williams at 40/1 odds could be a sneaky good play if you're looking to throw down $20 on a long-shot…

NBA News 2010: How Many Games Will Greg Oden Play for the Blazers?

Greg Oden playing with the Portland Trail BlazersImage via Wikipedia
In three seasons since being selected, out of a possible 246 games, Oden has appeared in 82 of them. The player selected after Oden in the 2007 draft, Kevin Durant, just became the youngest scoring champion in NBA history this past season

Suffice it to say, Portland wasn't banking on drafting a player who'd play one full season out of three when they spent the No. 1 pick on Oden. If he can get back on the court and stay healthy all season, he could finally become the force that made him the No. 1 pick; otherwise, if injuries intervene yet again, the Blazers may finally decide that Oden's body simply can't handle the rigors of being an NBA starter.
