NBA News 2012: Ricky Rubio's return too vital 'to rush'

Ricky Rubio's return to the Minnesota Timberwolves is coming. His rehabilitation from reconstructive left knee surgery is on schedule. He's just not sure exactly when the process will be complete.

"I'm trying to do as much things as I can do. They have to stop me sometimes because I want to do more. Sometimes it's bad for my knee to do more," Rubio said Thursday at the team's practice facility.

He could be playing in games by December. Or maybe not until January. Just as long as he doesn't try to come back too soon and risk re-injury or be too rusty.

"I don't want to say a time because I don't want to rush it. I just want to be ready when I'm ready," he said.

Rubio started running three weeks ago, at about 6 mph on a treadmill. Jumping is still prohibited, so his shooting is essentially limited to the free-throw line for the next few months. Agility work will come in three or four weeks. He's at that point in the anterior cruciate ligament recovery when patience becomes even more difficult to maintain. Missing the end of last season was tough enough. Then he had to skip the Olympics for his native Spain. Now he has to continue to watch while the work on the court goes on without him.

"You always have doubts and think about how you're going to come back. You just have to trust. I'm doing my best to be ready to be as strong as I can. I can't do more. I just want to be back soon as possible, but healthy as possible, too," Rubio said. "You feel how lucky you are when you're playing. So I'm going to be blessed when I come back and play."

NBA News 2012: Roy: 'So far I haven't had any setbacks'

English: Brandon Roy playing with the Portland...English: Brandon Roy playing with the Portland Trail Blazers (Photo credit: Wikipedia)Brandon Roy had just wrapped up a lengthy workout with a spirited game of five-on-five and gathered with several of his new Minnesota Timberwolves teammates near halfcourt.

''Let's run it back,'' Roy said, with several others agreeing. ''One more.''

That's when Wolves assistant Shawn Respert stepped in, waving his arms and telling everyone that they were done for the day. A little more than two weeks away from the beginning of training camp, Roy's chronic knees are feeling great. And it's up to the Timberwolves coaching and medical staff to try to keep it that way.

''This is the best I've felt in a long time,'' Roy said Thursday. ''The reason why I say that is I'm able to improve. I'm able to come in the gym and work on my game and get better. Where I felt that the last couple years in Portland I was just doing my best to maintain.

''That's the biggest thing I'm excited about is I'm in the gym, I'm working hard and coach has to tell me to stop playing instead of me saying, 'OK that's enough. I'm feeling my knees.'''

That's going to be the balancing act the Wolves perform with Roy, in training camp and in all likelihood for much of this season. The former Portland Trail Blazers All-Star had his contract cleared with the amnesty clause before last season, and he abruptly retired because of knee issues that derailed a brilliant young career.

After sitting out last season, Roy's knees felt good enough for him to come back. With the Timberwolves in search of a veteran presence at shooting guard for one of the youngest teams in the league, they signed Roy to a two-year deal and now are working to get him prepared for the grind of camp and the long NBA season.

Roy has been in town since the start of September to make sure his son could start school here on time, and he's taken advantage of the early arrival to throw himself into workouts and establish a new routine aimed at minimizing the pain in his knees.

''I set a plan for myself going into the season and so far I haven't had any setbacks,'' Roy said.

Roy has been working primarily with Respert and David Adelman, as well as the strength and conditioning staff to get ready, and the coaches see Roy's approach as a breath of fresh air for a team that had too many young players who didn't know what it takes to be successful in the NBA.

''We know we had a situation here last season where it was really difficult for guys to be self-starters,'' Respert said.

The team jettisoned Michael Beasley, Anthony Randolph and Darko Milicic in the offseason, bringing in Roy, Chase Budinger and Andrei Kirilenko to try to inject a little more maturity and professionalism into a young team with a core of Kevin Love, Ricky Rubio and Nikola Pekovic.

''With Brandon it's just a healthy attitude where he wants to see how much he can push himself to that limit before we have to shut him down and be smart about it,'' Respert said. ''He's been spectacular so far as far as the mentality, his toughness, his willingness to do what we ask him to do and still find that little bit of room to do a little bit more.''

He spends about 30 minutes before each workout going through exercises to get ready, and he said he's lifting more weights than ever, as well.

NBA News 2012: Golden State Warriors vs. Minnesota Timberwolves

Español: Ricky Rubio en el Olímpico de BadalonaEspañol: Ricky Rubio en el Olímpico de Badalona (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
This is a battle between state-named teams who almost always disappoint their fanbases. It's also a battle between two relatively enjoyable, balanced squads that have a decent shot of making the postseason next year. But it's probable that both teams watch the playoffs from home again.

The West is too deep this year to accommodate both newcomers, and possibly too deep to accommodate either. Dallas still has Dirk and an excellent coach in Rick Carlisle; Denver just got a nice defensive boost in the acquisition of Andre Iguodala.

Let us not sleep on the Utah Jazz, who have a young, developing roster. It stands to reason that they should be better next year just by virtue of gaining experience. While I would like to sleep on Portland, there is a chance they'll wake me up with a sweet LaMarcus Aldridge, Damian Lillard pick-and-roll combo. Again, it's a deep Western Conference class.

So I feel compelled to pick among the two teams, Warriors or Wolves, for that new playoff spot. For the sake of entertainment value, I wish both squads the best of luck—especially since Minnesota's luck depends on when Ricky Rubio will return and how healthy he'll be when he does. If Minny's success correlates with plays like this, then I'll cheer on that success.

Of course, the main engine of Minnesota success will be Kevin Love, he of top-five MVP candidate status. Love is coming off a breakout season, one in which he averaged a staggering 26 points and 13.3 rebounds. His boarding average actually dropped down a bit from 2010-2011 when he was at 15.2 per game.

This rebounding drop might be connected to a positive development, though. Love has discovered a deadly three-point shot which he's been using to stretch opposing defenses into knots. Love went from 2.9 attempts from beyond the arc in 2010-2011 to 5.1 in 2011-2012. Last year, he hit on a respectable .372 of those attempts.

Love's field-goal percentage doesn't look impressive at .448, but that's mostly a result of firing from deep. Once the threes are factored in, his true shooting percentage is a healthy .568. Functionally, the shot is a boon to Minnesota's offensive aspirations. Not every power forward can guard above the three-point line, and defenses must be extended to contest Love's attempts. It's all the more room for Ricky Rubio to exploit with his passing. Together, the two form one of the best pick-and-pop duos in basketball.

Apart from the burly inside play of Nikola Pevokic, the rest of Minnesota's roster fails to impress. Derrick Williams could come closer to No. 2 pick status next season; Luke Ridnour is a capable backup point guard; Russian rookie Alexey Shved should be erratic and exciting; Andrei Kirilenko is enigmatic, though still capable of flaunting a uniquely varied skill set.

The Wolves need Kirilenko to provide the defense that was lacking last year. They also need Rubio to come back quickly, in part because he was crucial to the defense they played earlier last season. It's asking a lot to depend on both players. I wouldn't be surprised to see Minny win over 50 games and wouldn't be shocked if they won less than 40.

NBA News 2012: Timberwolves submit offer sheet for Blazers' Batum

English: Nicolas Batum (Portland Trail Blazers)English: Nicolas Batum (Portland Trail Blazers) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)The Minnesota Timberwolves are about to find out just how serious the Portland Trail Blazers were when they said they would match any offer for restricted free agent forward Nicolas Batum.

The Timberwolves submitted a four-year, $46 million offer sheet signed by Batum on Sunday, giving the Blazers three days to match the offer or let him leave without compensation. The deal has incentives that could push the total value over $50 million, a hefty price for the 23-year-old swingman who has averaged 10.2 points and 3.9 rebounds in his first three seasons in the league.

The Trail Blazers acknowledged that they did receive the offer sheet Sunday night and said they would have no further comment until a decision has been made. If Portland general manager Neil Olshey is to be believed, that decision was made a long time ago.

As soon as the free agent market opened July 1, the Timberwolves set their sights on Batum, a versatile, 6-foot-8 shooter with an established reputation as a fine perimeter defender. Team president David Kahn and coach Rick Adelman think Batum is a perfect fit for their more open offensive system and can grow alongside rising young stars Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio.

''We're not in control of the situation,'' Kahn said on Friday, alluding to the Blazers' leverage with restricted free agency. ''I'm more of a glass-half-full person. You hope for the best and prepare for the worst. We're prepared for every option.''

One would be hard pressed to find an option that hasn't been considered while these two teams have gone back and forth over the last week.

The Wolves hosted Batum in the Twin Cities for a visit last week and he was impressed with what he heard. Agent Bouna Ndiaye said that his client was unhappy with how he was being used in Portland and would much prefer to play under Adelman and alongside Love and Rubio in Minnesota. They agreed to terms on an offer July 6, and spent the last 10 days trying to negotiate a sign-and-trade deal with the Blazers to make it happen.

But Olshey has been adamant that the Blazers would match any offer and were not interested in the assets the Wolves had to peddle in trade.

The process had several stops and starts, with Wolves owner Glen Taylor saying on Thursday the team planned ''to call their bluff'' and submit the offer sheet after being unwilling to part with Derrick Williams or Nikola Pekovic to get the deal done. But league rules forced the Wolves to wait until swingman Martell Webster, who was bought out on Friday, cleared waivers to create enough cap room for the deal to fit on the Wolves' books.

NBA News 2012: Irving named NBA's rookie of the year

Kyrie IrvingKyrie Irving (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving was named the National Basketball Association's (NBA) rookie of the year in a landslide victory after leading all first-year players in scoring, the league said on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old Irving, taken first overall in the 2011 NBA Draft, averaged 18.5 points and 5.4 assists in 51 games playing for a Cavaliers team that went 21-45 last season and finished with the fourth-worst record in the league.

"It was a great season, I had such an amazing time," the Australian-born Irving said at a news conference.

"All our guys on this team worked hard, whether we came out with wins or loses it was just about us competing every single day and I know this (team) is going in the right way."

Irving received 117 first-place votes from a panel of 120 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Minnesota's Ricky Rubio finished second with 170 points and Denver's Kenneth Faried was third with 129 points, including one first-place vote.

Irving is the first member of the Cavaliers to win the award since LeBron James was named rookie of the year in 2004.

NBA News 2011: Knicks, T-Wolves Discussing Trade Involving Douglas, Flynn

Jonny Flynn of the Minnesota TImberwolves look...Image via Wikipedia
The Knicks have had preliminary discussions with the Minnesota Timberwolves about a trade for point guard Jonny Flynn.

No formal deal is in place, but the Knicks are debating whether Flynn, the sixth overall pick of the 2009 draft would be a viable option to back up Chauncey Billups for at least one season. Flynn has become expendable now that the Wolves have signed Spanish guard Ricky Rubio, who was taken one pick ahead of Flynn.

NBA News 2010: Kevin Durant leads US to 86-85 win over Spain

Rubio warming up with DKV Joventut.Image via WikipediaMADRID (AP)—Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim called for a switch to his trademark “Orange” 2-3 zone with the United States clinging to a one-point lead.
Kevin Durant did the rest, blocking shots by Ricky Rubio and Rudy Fernandez in the final seconds in the Americans’ 86-85 victory over Spain on Sunday in a warmup game for the world championships.
“Jim Boeheim said, `Let’s go orange,”’ U.S. head coach Mike Krzyzewski said. “So we did. It was his suggestion and our guys did a good job with that.”
Durant led the United States with 25 points.
The decision to go to the zone defense for the last play caught Spain off-guard after Derrick Rose put the Americans ahead with two free throws.
“I just wanted to cover as much ground as I could and help my teammates,” said Durant, who also had 10 rebounds. “I just didn’t want to foul on a 3-pointer so I stayed down and, luckily, game over.”
The United States rallied after Spain—13 points behind after three quarters—took a one-point lead on Juan Carlos Navarro’s three-point play with 27 seconds left.
“It was one of those games that was a learning experience for us and I think we made key plays down the stretch,” Durant said. “We also played as a team and stuck through tough times.”
Rose finished with 13 points, and Lamar Odom had 12 points and nine rebounds for the United States, 3-0 on its exhibition tour.

NBA News 2010: Jazz Replace Boozer With Jefferson

Minnesota Timberwolves New UniformsImage by Doug Wallick via FlickrThe Jazz and Wolves made a simple trade on Tuesday, exchanging Al Jefferson for two future first round picks, a former first round pick in Kosta Koufos and a traded player exception.
But the trade gets more interesting when we play retroactive GM and realize the Jazz essentially swapped Carlos Boozer (along with what was sent to Minnesota) for Jefferson. The contract Jefferson is under is more affordable annually and is also shorter in length, plus he is several years younger.
For the Wolves, they have now essentially sent Kevin Garnett to the Celtics for Jonny Flynn (their own pick back from the Wally Szczerbiak trade), Wayne Ellington, Koufos, Martell Webster and two more additional picks. It is a whole collection of assets that conceivably could have instead been Stephen Curry and DeJuan Blair, but it is certainly a forewarning to the Hornets as they continue to internally debate whether or not to trade Chris Paul.
Conversely, a preemptive strike such as what Minnesota accomplished with Garnett and Utah did not do with Boozer almost always elicits a better return.
The Cavaliers and Heat each received as much for LeBron James and Chris Bosh, respectively, as the Wolves did for Jefferson. At the very least, it is a feather of some degree in David Kahn's hat, even if it is not an analogous comparison.
Kahn might have drafted two point guards in Flynn and Ricky Rubio, plus signed a third in Ramon Sessions during this first couple of months on the job, but he at least did not draft a second power forward when the old regime picked up Kevin Love. The trade for Love was a good one, as it shifted around some assets and he was the better prospect for Minnesota than O.J. Mayo, but it did create this roster imbalance. Not to discredit Love, but drafting Brook Lopez, who did appear to be their preferred pick at various times would have made life infinitely less complicated.
Minnesota knew they had to trade either Jefferson or Love and they absolutely made the correct decision. Right off the top, Love is younger and cheaper than Jefferson, plus I believe he is ultimately the superior player.
There was the pipe dream of trading Jefferson for someone like Danny Granger, but that was always unrealistic. I thought they could eventually do well by dealing him for someone a little less established, but his injury concerns, somewhat burdensome contract and the limited way he impacts a game.
Defensively and as a passer, Jefferson doesn't offer his team very much. He is a true power forward, but he is capable of being a big body of resistance in the paint against bigger offensive players, even if the resistance is relatively useless.
For the Jazz, acquiring Jefferson one week after losing Boozer at least allows them to sustain their 09-10 level of play for the remainder of Deron Williams' contract. As much as this franchise will ever appease a player, remaining committed to doing everything within their power to keep Williams content with the situation is an imperative given how valuable he is to their continued success. The Jazz are in a better situation than the Hornets are with Chris Paul, but they were another backtrack move or two away having Williams become more vocal with displeasure.
This move does once again murk up Paul Millsap's role with the team. Do the Jazz go small and start both Millsap and Jefferson, or do they remain more conventional?
Furthermore, the logic of passing on Ed Davis and Patrick Patterson in favor of Gordon Hayward becomes more clear in light of the Jefferson acquisition. I had both of those power forwards rated higher than Hayward, plus the need for a replacement for Boozer seemed like an inevitability.
Grade for Jazz: B-
Ultimately, this trade was one both teams had to make because the alternatives were unattractive, even if this doesn't feel great. The Jazz could ill-afford to begin the season without bringing in a replacement for Boozer's production and Jefferson's trade value wasn't going to increase when the season began and Kahn would be forced into increasing his desperation.
Grade for Wolves: B+

NBA News 2010: Sacramento Kings Draft Preview (5th, 33rd Overall Picks)

Basketball player DeMarcus CousinsImage via WikipediaPicks Owned: 5th, 33rd
Areas Of Need
Even though the Kings will eventually need to find a special point guard who is capable of sharing the backcourt with the ball dominant Tyreke Evans, they absolutely need to upgrade the frontcourt, where they routinely played at a deficit at the center and power forward positions. The pieces Sacramento has at power forward in Carl Landry and Jason Thompson would be greatly enhanced by playing beside a strong center.
Draft Targets
If DeMarcus Cousins happens to drop all the way to the fifth slot, the Kings may very well have repeat Rookie of the Year awards. Even though Geoff Petrie would have assuredly taken John Wall first overall if Sacramento had won the lottery, Cousins is the better overall pick for the franchise assuming his personality issues get sorted out completely.
During his first few seasons in the NBA, Cousins will absolutely score primarily at the rim on lobs and put-backs, but I would be surprised if he doesn’t have one of the better low post games and an occasional 15-footer (especially on the pick-and-pop) a season or two before his restricted free agency year.
Preferably instead of Johnson if Cousins is off the board, however, the Kings could possibly trade down a few slots to preserve some cap space and then draft a Cole Aldrich or Greg Monroe to address the center position.
As far as the 33rd overall pick, either Dominique Jones or Terrico White would be excellent options to pair with Evans.
Draft History
  • 2009: Tyreke Evans, 4th / Omri Casspi, 23rd / Jon Brockman, 38th
  • 2008: Jason Thompson, 12th / Sean Singletary, 42nd
  • 2007: Spencer Hawes, 10th
  • 2006: Quincy Douby, 19th
  • 2005: Francisco Garcia, 23rd
  • 2004: Kevin Martin, 23rd
  • 2003: No pick
  • 2002: Pick traded
  • 2001: Gerald Wallace, 25th
  • 2000: Hedo Turkoglu, 16th
*Only notable second round picks listed
Like so many GMs, Petrie's most successful picks have come when he has ignored position and made BPA picks. The Kings have had good success outside of the lottery with the 23rd overall pick in Martin and Casspi and hopefully they can translate that to the 33rd overall pick this season.
History of the 5th Overall Pick
  • 2009: Ricky Rubio, Wolves, NA
  • 2008: Kevin Love, Wolves/Grizzlies, 19.4
  • 2007: Jeff Green, Sonics/Celtics, 12.7
  • 2006: Shelden Williams, Hawks, 12.7
  • 2005: Raymond Felton, Bobcats, 14.1
  • 2004: Devin Harris, Mavericks/Wizards, 17.6
  • 2003: Dwyane Wade, Heat, 25.7
  • 2002: Nikoloz Tskitishvilli, Nuggets, 5.2
  • 2001: Jason Richardson, Warriors, 16.9
  • 2000: Mike Miller, Magic, 15.3
