NBA News 2011: Lakers reverse Spurs’ fortunes

Photo of the San Antonio Spurs Tim Duncan. Cro...Image via Wikipedia
Given the opponent, there was little doubt the Lakers (45-19) needed this one. They had lost twice already this season to the Spurs, who were not only ahead of them in the standings but were beginning to recapture a bit of swagger in the series.

The Lakers earned the win with physicality — at one point, after blocking a George Hill attempt, Ron Artest literally flexed his muscles for the sold-out crowd — and with intimidation.

Popovich’s explanation for his unwavering belief in the Lakers is this: “Phil Jackson is still their coach. Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol still play for them.”

To that list, add Bynum, the Lakers’ oft-injured wunderkind 7-footer. Sunday, Tim Duncan called him “the difference in the game.”

When Bynum wasn’t cleaning the glass, with eight rebounds in the first quarter, he was helping harass Duncan into two points on 1-of-7 shooting.

“They hit us in the mouth from the beginning,” said Spurs guard Gary Neal, who had a team-high 15 points. “By the time we realized it, it was the ninth round, and we were down on the scorecard.”

NBA News 2011: San Antonio Spurs Against Lakers

Los Angeles Lakers #24 - Kobe BryantImage by Evan Wohrman via Flickr
Record against Lakers: 2-0

Games left: 2

This is no doubt the matchup everyone is curious about.

The Lakers are heading into the playoffs as two time defending champs and are by all accounts the team to beat.

If it comes down to this matchup I believe that the Spurs have a very clear and dominating advantage.

Like I said earlier, the playoffs are very different from the regular season, and thus we will not take into account the fact that Kobe has shot below 30 percent against the Spurs this year.

In the playoffs, Kobe knows how to play and if he begins shooting poorly look for him to devote his energy to some other facet of the game.

The starting five are also very well balanced and the Duncan - Gasol matchup could be the big factor in this series.

I would love to see this match up and the winner of this could very well end up winning it all.

However, my prediction is that if this happens, the Spurs will win in a relatively easy fashion when considering the magnitude of this clash.

The Chance of Beating the Lakers: Moderate to High

NBA News 2011: Lakers strike down latest rumor of four-player deal involving Carmelo Anthony

Mitch KupchakImage by iccsports via Flickr
There’s another trade rumor involving the Lakers and the Denver Nuggets about a possible four-player deal, but a Lakers official, who declined to talk publicly, steadfastly denied it.

The scenario: the Lakers would trade center Andrew Bynum and Ron Artest for forwards Carmelo Anthony and Al Harrington. But the Lakers denied it was on the table in the first place and insisted team executive Jim Buss and General Manager Mitch Kupchak were on the same page as far as trade opportunities.

Coach Phil Jackson chuckled at the rumors in general after the Lakers practiced Wednesday in Boston. “I haven't even entertained it,” Jackson said of trading for Anthony. “My first thought is why are these [media] people interrupting my life with these kind of rumors.”

NBA News 2010: Lakers perimeter defense to challenge Heat

DSC02142Image by bridgetds via Flickr
At times, Ron Artest feels bored on the court.

He says playing on team with scorers such as Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom can cause him to lose interest on the offensive end. It's the life of the forwards Artest and Matt Barnes, the Los Angeles Lakers' two defensive stoppers. While the Miami Heat's superstars are arguably their best defenders, the Lakers will counter in Saturday's game with a pair of players whose priority is defense.

Tough defense.

"It's kind of cool because I get the chance to still be effective on the court rather than just be a scorer," Artest said. "But it's also kind of boring. I'm such a good defender but sometimes I'm not scoring and scoring is fun, especially when you can score."

He and Barnes, the backup small forward, will spend the bulk of the game defending Heat star LeBron James. The two have earned reputations as being aggressive defenders throughout their careers. Artest has twice made the NBA's All-Defensive first-team, with many feeling he was snubbed last year.

"It's just as exciting on defense because when I get stops and steals, it's kind of an adrenaline rush," Artest said. "I know that I'm doing things on the court that no one else is doing on the court."

NBA News 2010: Matt Barnes settles in with Lakers

BARCELONA, SPAIN - OCTOBER 07:Matt Barnes #9 o...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
LOS ANGELES -- It was an unfortunate oversight, but completely accidental. Which is why Matt Barnes was allowed to enter and exit the Lakers locker room Thursday night wearing a Kelly green dress shirt.

"People have been giving me a hard time all night," Barnes said. "I mean, it's green. But it's not Celtic green."

Laughs, not sympathy, met that statement. But Barnes stood his ground, finished buttoning his shirt and apologized to no one for the fashion transgression.

The Los Angeles Lakers are the 10th team Barnes has been with in his nine NBA seasons, so forgive him if it takes him a couple of months to get all the new traditions, fashion faux pas and rivalries of his new team down.

Barnes now has history with a third of the NBA's 30 teams. He's never spent more than two seasons with any organization. He's never signed a contract worth more than $3 million in any season.

"I wish I had the answer to it, I really do," he said. "By no means am I struggling, but for a guy that's been doing what I've been doing, I've yet to really reap the benefits.

"I wish I had the answer because my bank account could use a little bit."

"What he brings is invaluable," Lakers guard Kobe Bryant said. "Nobody really appreciates what he does. He's got to get on teams like ours that are veteran teams, championship teams, great teams, that really appreciate what he brings to the team."

The Lakers have some scars that never fade, too. As sweet as their last two championship runs have been, there will always be the sour memory of what happened three years ago in Boston, where the Celtics basically punked them in the NBA Finals.

"I think it was a conscious effort to get tougher," Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said at Barnes' introductory news conference this fall. "We didn't add [Ron Artest] because he's a 25-points-a-game scorer, we added him because of his defensive ability [and] his toughness that he brings to the court.

"I thought a couple years ago when Andrew [Bynum] got hurt we weren't very, I guess 'tough' is the word; Kobe may have been our toughest player, but Andrew came back this year and we added Ron Artest and now Matt Barnes is going to help even more so."

So far, Barnes has fit well with the Lakers. He's still learning the triangle offense. But he's accepted his role with the second unit, shot well from outside and hustled, scrapped and clawed for every inch of territory, just as the Lakers expected.

NBA News 2010: Lakers off to dominant start without being full strength

LOS ANGELES, CA - DECEMBER 12: Francisco Garc...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Lakers don't have 7-0 center Andrew Bynum because of right knee surgery. Kobe Bryant still isn't himself, either, because of right knee surgery.

And still, the Lakers were not just winning but mostly dominating en route to a 4-0 start, with a 13-point average margin of victory, entering Wednesday's game against the Sacramento Kings. The Lakers' lowest production had been 107 points against the Golden State Warriors on Sunday. That meant rookies Devin Ebanks and Derrick Caracter got more playing time than expected, and veterans such as Bryant (15th season) and Ron Artest (12th) were able to rest.

Artest had played more than 29 minutes only once. Bryant hadn't played more than 27 minutes in the previous two games. Ebanks got into two games and was averaging 11.5 minutes. Caracter hadn't played more than 10 minutes in three appearances.

NBA News 2010: Best and worst power-forward signings

BOSTON - JUNE 05: Paul Pierce #34 of the Bost...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
LOS ANGELES — Just when was the exact moment in the offseason that the Los Angeles Lakers and Phil Jackson became destiny's darlings, the Lakers headed toward a third consecutive NBA championship and Jackson certain to culminate his Hall of Fame career with a historic fourth three-peat?

Maybe it was when eccentric forward Ron Artest, a first-time champion with the Lakers in June, changed his jersey number from 37 to 15, what he wore in college at St. John's. He did this, he says, as a response to LeBron James and Chris Bosh joining Dwyane Wade to create a formidable title challenger with the Miami Heat. No. 15, Artest says, means he is recommitted to "48 minutes of hustle, hustle, hustle."

Maybe it was when another eccentric Lakers forward, Lamar Odom— who added "world champion" to his bio playing for the U.S. national team this summer — got the following text from his reality TV personality wife, Khloe Kardashian: "The unbelievable is achievable."

Maybe, more likely, it was when Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, a five-time NBA champion, showed up to training camp as motivated as ever to win another title. That would match him with Michael Jordan, against whom Bryant and his career are often measured.

A sixth title "would be special, but it has nothing to do with Michael," Bryant says. "It would be special to win again. That's why I'm here, to help us get to that mountain again."

Or maybe the next title was nailed down the minute the Lakers beat the Boston Celtics in June to win their second in a row and Jackson simply couldn't resist the symmetry of bowing out with a fourth three-peat, not to mention giving the franchise 17 titles, the same as the archrival Celtics.

NBA News 2010: The New Look Los Angeles Lakers

Kobe Bryant Warmup SpursImage via Wikipedia
Although the Lakers are on the quest for their 4th straight Finals appearance and 3rd straight championship with much of their core in tact, don't be fooled in thinking that this is the same old Laker team from last season. Great draft picks and offseason acquisitions, an older veteran crew and injuries will reshape the Los Angeles Lakers for this upcoming NBA season.

Possibly the most important off-season acquisition was acquiring Steve Blake. For several years now, a veteran Derek Fisher received minimal assistance at the point from the bench. Sure, Jordan Farmar and Shannon Brown supplied a few quick sparks here and there, but lacked consistency which ultimately put the Lakers in jeopardy. Combine this with Derek having a bad game and the Lakers lose, almost always. Steve Blake is a proven scorer and defender, and above all, has the high basketball IQ which is so crucial to Phil and the triangle offense. This new look Lakers will consist of Derek playing limited minutes in the regular season, possibly splitting time with Steve Blake and to some degree, Shannon Brown.

Matt Barnes brings intensity off of the bench for Kobe Bryant without having to worry about Sasha's gunslinging ways and poor decision making. Barnes is as close to a franchise role player as you can get. His defense, combined with Ron Artest, will pester and frustrate almost all of the NBA's strong perimeter players. He can also be counted on a solid 8 points per game. Furthermore, Kobe can rest his high mileage legs with confidence in maintaining or even extending the current lead. For once, Laker fans don't have to pray that "The Machine" has had an oil change prior to the game.

The new-look Lakers will involve Kobe Bryant playing less minutes, especially early in the season.

The 2010-2011 Los Angeles Lakers feature 5 new players, that means a little over one-third of their roster is new. With a combination of proven talent alongside strong projects, the Lakers have strengthened their bench.

The end result?

Look for this new-look Lakers to bring the same old championship back to Los Angeles.

NBA News 2010: Kobe Bryant: 'The hunger will be there'

LOS ANGELES, CA - MAY 04: Kobe Bryant #24 of ...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- The Lakers now have Steve Blake and Matt Barnes, two players who fill offensive and defensive needs in addition to bringing in ringless players who can infuse the back-to-back champions with extra motivation ... which would be a perfectly legitimate storyline if the Lakers didn't have Kobe Bryant.

"Just speaking with Kobe, I don't think he needs any motivation," Blake said. "His mind is set on winning again."

When Barnes entered the Lakers' locker room for the first time he heard Bryant in a heated conversation with Ron Artest, talking about getting over screens and locking up in man-to-man defense, a discussion that might seem more appropriate for a playoff game timeout than a leisurely summer day.

"If he's that hungry, I'm starving," said Barnes, who has landed on his eighth team in his quest to join a winner. "I don't think the mentality of the team is to sit back and get fat."

That's because the mentality of this team is dictated by Bryant, who still appears lean after 14 NBA seasons and five championships. As the challenges -- whether he can win a championship, whether he can win one without Shaq, whether he can beat the Celtics -- keep falling to the side, the drive hasn't gone anywhere.

"I don't have to search for motivation or anything like that," Bryant said. "I want to make sure us as a team, we're moving in that direction. You don't have to search for anything. The motivation is there. We're here to win. Simple as that."

NBA News 2010: 2010-11 Los Angeles Lakers Preview: Can The Champs Pull Off The Three-Peat?

President Barack Obama holds a personalized te...Image via Wikipedia
The doubters were loud even before the season started, when general manager Mitch Kupchek made the risky decision to sign Ron Artest instead of re-sign Trevor Ariza, a key cog in the 2009 title team. Once the season actually got going, star big man Pau Gasol was hurt. Kobe Bryant finally showed his age, slogging through multiple finger injuries to post his worst regular-season in a decade. Artest struggled at times to fit in, Andrew Bynum again struggled with injuries and Derek Fisher showed his age. The Lakers ended up finishing just 15-14 down the stretch in the regular season, and many felt they were too old to go through a tough Western Conference

But despite all those bumps in the road, the Lakers persevered. They held off the upstart Oklahoma City Thunder in a great series, swept by the shorthanded Jazz, held off the Suns and outlasted the Celtics. Along the way, Bryant regained his touch (except in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, of course), Gasol shed all the doubters of his toughness once and for all and Artest provided the lift the team hoped they'd get when they signed him. It certainly wasn't a textbook run to the title, but the adversity made the Lakers stronger. They fed off it and used it as motivation on their way back to the top.

This summer, the Lakers plugged some holes by signing Steve Blake, Matt Barnes and Theo Ratliff. SB Nation's Lakers blog Silver Screen and Roll believes they made out like bandits with those signings.

Me? I'm guessing the Lakers lay low a bit in the regular season and let the Heat build up confidence and press with regular-season wins. 56-26 is my guess, with a return trip to the Finals in the cards. I'm guessing Miami will be on the other end of that confrontation. Who wins? Good question. I still haven't decided.

NBA News 2010: Ron Artest to auction championship ring

Ron Artest (far left), Kobe Bryant (center), J...Image via Wikipedia
SAN DIEGO -- Ron Artest of the Los Angeles Lakers is motivated to win another NBA championship because he plans to auction his ring from last season's title to raise money for mental health counseling in schools.

"I'm still searching for that first ring. I'm not going to have a ring, and I really do want a ring," Artest said during a visit to San Diego to promote an exhibition game against the Golden State Warriors on Oct. 21. "This one was on the house. The next one, I guess, you could say, is on me."

During an interview after the Lakers clinched the title with a Game 7 victory over the Boston Celtics in June, Artest thanked his psychiatrist for helping him relax during the playoffs. He said he received counseling for a few months when he was 13, but that funding for the program dried up.

"When I grew up, mental health was something that wasn't talked about. People were scared to say they were seeing a psychologist and stuff like that. Even before the championship I was telling people I was seeing a psychiatrist. When we won the championship, it was on a much more larger scale -- 'Wow, he really said that.'"

Artest, who's trying to put his bad-boy image behind him, said he could simply display his ring in his living room or he could wear it.

"But I think it'll be more important to give back to something I believe in, which is providing kids with someone to talk to because it's so expensive. I pay for parenting counseling, marriage counseling and anger management, and it's very expensive. This will be for children of all demographics, rich or poor -- preferably the rich can pay for their own psychologists -- but it'll be a great way to help kids who don't know where they're going in their life at this point."

NBA News 2010: Devin Ebanks Setting The Bar High

Devin EbanksImage by jgrove via Flickr
Devin Ebanks wasn't supposed to be a second round pick. Three years ago, he was one of the top high school players in the nation and looked like a future lottery pick. He was putting up impressive numbers, dominating national tournaments and camps, and being recruited by the top college programs in the country.

So how did the Los Angeles Lakers land Ebanks with the forty-third pick in this year's draft? After two solid seasons at West Virginia, the twenty-year old forward was overlooked in a class that was loaded with wing players. Despite being one of the better athletes in the group and possessing the kind of potential not usually found in a second round selection, Ebanks sat in front of his television and watched as other players came off of the board in front of him.

He's happy to be in the league, but he's not ready to forget what happened on draft night. Going into the Las Vegas Summer League, Ebanks – along with fellow Lakers rookie Derrick Caracter – felt this was the perfect environment to show teams what they missed out on. Both were, at one time, projected to be top picks and had slipped into the second round.

"We both had chips on our shoulders because we felt like we should have went higher and our chemistry is great," Ebanks said. "I actually played with D.C. when I was younger, back in high school, so we knew each other's styles a little bit. It turned out to help us a lot in Vegas."

Throughout the week and a half, Ebanks and Caracter put on a clinic, averaging a combined 30.4 points and emerging as two of the best rookies in Vegas. That wasn't a surprise to Ebanks.

Even if he doesn't play big minutes during his rookie campaign, the young forward knows that he'll have plenty of opportunities to develop and learn from the veterans ahead of him on the depth chart.

"I spoke to Lamar when I first got to Los Angeles to practice for the Summer League. When I signed my contract, I spoke to Ron Artest when he was out there. Both of them were excited for me to get out there and hopefully I can just learn behind them because they have great NBA experience," he said.

Odom and Artest will definitely take Ebanks, a fellow Queens native, under their wings next season. But even with the "say Queensbridge" connection, Ebanks has already started to give fans in Los Angeles flashbacks to a different forward that used to wear purple and gold.

After finishing the Pre-Draft Camp in Chicago, the Trevor Ariza comparisons started. The two had almost the exact same measurements in almost every category. Height, weight, vertical leap, standing reach, lane agility drills, and the ¾ court sprint; you name it and the two forwards had eerily similar numbers. With his perimeter defense and athleticism, Ebanks says that Lakers fans have made him well aware of the similarities.

"I've heard that a lot," said Ebanks. "We definitely do have a lot of similarities in our games, but we're two different players and I'm just going to try to play the way I usually play."

NBA News 2010: Los Angeles Lakers' Summer Report Card

CATEGORY
GRADE
Frontcourt

The Lakers are five-deep with potential starters: Pau Gasol, Ron Artest, Andrew Bynum, Lamar Odom, Matt Barnes. That's a tremendous luxury, but also a necessity given Bynum's injury history.
A
Backcourt

Kobe Bryant is still great and Derek Fisher remains a clutch contributor, but only if their bodies allow it. Adding Steve Blake and re-signing Shannon Brown ensures depth at the point.
B
Defense

Bryant and Artest form what is probably the league's best wing tandem on defense, and now Barnes joins the mix. The Lakers were fifth in shooting defense last season.
A
Bench

Odom is an enviable first option. Then, with no incumbent starters leaving, the Lakers were aggressive in the offseason in solidifying the second unit, most notably signing Blake and Barnes.
B
Coaching

The summer would have been a success even without the positive line-up adjustments, as long as Phil Jackson returned. Once he committed to 2010-11, stability and sideline experience was ensured.

NBA News 2010: Los Angeles Lakers: The New 'Bad Boys' of NBA Basketball?

Phoenix Suns small forward Matt Barnes at a ro...Image via Wikipedia
Maybe there is something in the weather? Maybe the true colors of these NBA bad boys (Artest, Barnes) are starting to seep through again? Maybe it's something about September that has the Lakers' new kids on the block getting into trouble.

First, Ron Artest having a run in with the Los Angeles Police Department and now Matt Barnes being arrested on alleged domestic violence may signify that the bad boys are back in LA.

Apparently, Matt Barnes is a bully on and off the court.

Barnes will likely receive a stern suspension and fine from the Commissioner of the NBA, no pun intended. There were around five suspensions and fines in the month of August. Will Artest be fined for his fast and the furious race car incident?

Two legal issues in the past week are not the best of ways to start off the 2010-11 NBA season. Looking forward, will these offseason mishaps have any effects on the defending back-to-back NBA Champion Los Angeles Lakers?

The Lakers head coach (Phil Jackson) is known for giving players a book to read at the start of the season; will Barnes' book have something to do with domestic violence?

Los Angeles is now a stacked deck of trouble makers and bullies.

NBA News 2010: Money Never Sleeps: The Meaning Of The Lakers' Offseason

From left to right, Lamar Odom, Derek Fisher, ...Image via WikipediaSo this is as good a point as any to step back, catch our breath and evaluate the moves and non-moves the Lakers have made since June 17, when they finally subdued the Boston Celtics in Game Seven of the Finals. On that rapturous night, none of us knew exactly what lay ahead. We knew that the core on-court talent (consisting of Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Ron Artest, Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum) was under contract for three more seasons, but that's where our certainty ended. We didn't know whether Phil Jackson would be back. We didn't know what the team would do with its second-round draft picks. We didn't know what, if anything, the front office would spend to retain free-agent guards Jordan Farmar and Shannon Brown. We didn't know whether they would take advantage of their mid-level salary-cap exception (MLE) to reinforce the bench in the free-agent market.
The theme unifying all of these questions was money. Team ownership has enjoyed the vast revenue streams that flow from back-to-back NBA championships, but the outlays have been massive as well. In the past two seasons the Lakers have had the NBA's highest payroll by no small margin. This spring, rumors gathered about possible cost-cutting measures: a substantial pay cut for Phil, a salary-dump trade of Odom, a reluctance to spend the team's MLE money.
We as fans have little ability to evaluate the need for such austerity. Unlike, say, shareholders in a publicly traded business, we have no right to inspect our favorite team's financial statements. There are estimates of financial performance available - for instance, in the annual Forbes franchise valuations - but those are just educated guesses. Ultimately, we're forced simply to trust our owners to do right by the teams we root for. Some owners reward that trust better than others.
And few have ever stepped up to the plate the way Jerry Buss has done yet again this summer. At every turn, Dr. Buss has opened his considerable war chest to bankroll the campaign for another title. Phil got paid his asking price, give or take a few ducats. Farmar was allowed to walk, but the cash the Lakers would've spent to retain him was deployed to sign Steve Blake, a superior player. Brown and Derek Fisher were re-upped at salaries they should be happy with. The MLE was used in full to upgrade the backup center (Theo Ratliff) and small forward (Matt Barnes) positions. With their two draft picks, which they could easily have sold off or used to select guys to stash in Europe for a couple years, the Lakers added Devin Ebanks and Derrick Caracter, both of whom look like they could contribute as early as this season.

NBA News 2010: Are Kobe Bryant, Ron Artest and Matt Barnes the NBA's Top Defensive Trio?

The Los Angeles Lakers show some local DC kids...Image via WikipediaThe Los Angeles Lakers are favored to capture their fourth Western Conference championship in as many years, and look to compete for their third NBA championship in a row. And if they reach those peaks, it will be on the back of their defense.
The Lakers have always been known for their precision-based triangle offense, but the addition of free agent Matt Barnes gives the Lakers a defensive element that few teams can boast.
Barnes, Ron Artest, and Kobe Bryant just might be the NBA's best trio of perimeter defenders, and their versatility allows them to impact the game in a variety of ways.
Artest is a former NBA Defensive Player of the Year, and although he doesn't possess the same quickness as when he won the award, he's still one of the more physical defenders in the league.
Size and strength are Artest's best weapons, and it doesn't hurt that his reputation as one of the more unpredictable players in the league gives him an aura of intimidation.
Artest is still vulnerable to players who are quicker, but Barnes has more quickness and while he may not be as strong as Artest, he does have quite a bit of power in his 6'7" frame.
Barnes could end up being the Lakers' most significant addition in the last few seasons besides Artest, because he blends seamlessly with Los Angeles' goal to get tougher defensively.
Barnes is equally adept at either wing position, and the Lakers' shouldn't suffer any significant drop-off defensively when Bryant leaves the game.
Speaking of Bryant, Barnes will allow him even more defensive freedom than he experienced last season playing alongside Artest, and he should be available to jump passing lanes more often.
Bryant is one of the most intellectual and instinctive defensive players in the NBA, and with Barnes and Artest backing him up, Bryant should be able to take more gambles in the open court.

NBA News 2010: Why Can't We Be Friends: Los Angeles Lakers Sign Former Foe Matt Barnes

Matt Barnes with the Orlando MagicImage via WikipediaOn Tuesday afternoon, seventh-year swingman Matt Barnes was officially introduced as the Los Angeles Lakers' latest free agent acquisition—another one of the many magician-like moves general manager Mitch Kupchak has pulled out of his hat; this one of the discounted two-year, $3.6 million variety.
The signing of Barnes cements L.A.'s last major crack on its relatively new-look roster, a roster that is expected to have as few as five new names on it when training camp commences in late September.
What's more, is it supplements the team's defensive-minded, tough-guy mentality, which allowed the Lakers to capture their second NBA championship in as many seasons just last month.
Barnes's ability to play both the shooting guard and small forward positions will alleviate the heavy load of minutes that Kobe Bryant has carried throughout his 14-year career.
The aging Ron Artest will also benefit from longer breathers, especially if he continues to pursue a secondary career in rapping.
