NBA News 2012: Durant, Thunder still chasing first NBA title

Weeks after sobbing with his parents after Miami beat Oklahoma City Thunder four straight times to win the NBA championship, Durant was celebrating a gold medal with Team USA in London.

Now comes the task of trying to make up for that championship that was lost. Durant will have to lead an even younger Thunder squad back to the finals if he wants a different ending.

''It was just so tough to lose because I really thought it was our year. I felt we had a good run. We beat Dallas, San Antonio, the Lakers,'' Durant said, listing off Oklahoma City's playoff opponents from last season and the only teams that had won the West since 1998. ''I thought it was our time, but unfortunately it wasn't. Those guys came out and beat us, and it was tough to go through that.''

Television cameras caught Durant's reaction in the moments just after he stepped off of Miami's home floor for what normally would have been a relatively private encounter with his family. Instead, the whole world was able to witness the way Durant reacted, which he said was the same as it was when he was growing up.

''When you lose a tough series, there's no question it's heartache. You feel it for many days,'' coach Scott Brooks said. ''I've been around teams when you lose, the fingers are pointed and you look for blame. The thing that I'm proud of with our guys, I never saw that. Individually, nobody was outspoken. Nobody was behind each other's back.

''We understand that we had a great year but it's time to move on. It's time to focus on this season. Last year was a great experience, but it won't guarantee us an opportunity back there. We have to work for it.''

The Thunder still have the nucleus of the team that made it to last year's finals and to the Western Conference finals two seasons ago. Three-time league scoring champion Durant and fellow All-Star Russell Westbrook will once again be joined by Kendrick Perkins, Serge Ibaka and Thabo Sefolosha in the starting five with NBA Sixth Man of the Year James Harden coming off the bench.

Ibaka signed a four-year contract extension in the offseason, following Durant and Westbrook in committing to Oklahoma City long term but also drawing into question whether the small-market franchise would be able to afford Harden. The Thunder will need to go over the salary cap - and pay the luxury tax - to keep him unless they shed some payroll elsewhere.

Harden is at least in the mix for this year's run.

''We're young, we have all the talent in the world. The small things and attention to detail can take us even further,'' Harden said. ''I think offensively, we can score with any team in the NBA. We have just as much firepower as any team in the NBA. I think what's going to put us over to that next level is our consistent defense. We have spurts where we look very good. We have spurts where we look average. I think for championship teams, we need to be locked in every possession.''

Beyond their big six, some of the Thunder's pieces are changing. Veteran Nick Collison remains with the team and backup point guard Eric Maynor will be back after missing most of last season with a knee injury, but three locker room leaders - Derek Fisher, Nazr Mohammed and Royal Ivey - were allowed to leave in free agency.

In their places are relatively inexperienced replacements, including free agent center Hasheem Thabeet and first-round draft pick Perry Jones III from Baylor.

Fisher and Mohammed were two of the team's only three players who had won an NBA title. Perkins, who won one with Boston, is now the only one left to speak from experience about what it takes to win it all.

''I think we all understand what it takes to at least get to the finals, but I think the finals was overwhelming to a lot of us,'' Perkins said. ''I think we got caught up in just being in the finals and quit playing basketball.''

The Thunder have progressed - from out of the playoffs to a first-round exit to the West finals to the NBA Finals. Perkins said the bottom line was ''we didn't reach our goal.''

NBA News 2012: Celtics re-sign Jeff Green

Boston Celtics v/s Washington Wizards April 11...Boston Celtics v/s Washington Wizards April 11, 2011 (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
The Boston Celtics have re-signed forward Jeff Green.

Green missed all of last season after a physical exam revealed an aortic aneurysm. He underwent surgery and became a free agent before signing Wednesday.

The 6-foot-9 Green had been expected to play a key role as a backup forward last season and is being counted on to do that next season. The Celtics obtained him from Oklahoma City in February 2011 with center Nenad Krstic and a first-round draft pick from the Los Angeles Clippers for center Kendrick Perkins and guard Nate Robinson.

In 2010-11, Green averaged 13.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 32.4 minutes. For his four-year career, the former Georgetown player has averaged 13.9 points and 5.5 rebounds.

NBA News 2011: Kendrick Perkins: I don't like Chandler

A cropped version of File:Tyson Chandler.jpg d...Image via Wikipedia
Oklahoma City 's Perkins has an opposing opinion about his rivalry with Chandler.

"Me and Tyson never got along. I'm serious," said Perkins, whom the Thunder acquired in a trade deadline deal with the Boston Celtics. "He don't like me, I don't like him and that's pretty much how it's been. Everybody always looks at me as kind of like a dirty player if you're on the opposite team, but he's just as dirty as anybody else."

The double technicals occurred after Perkins got in Chandler's face after a play. Chandler raised both arms in the air and said he did nothing to earn a T -- the NBA rescinded it on Wednesday -- but he understands that the officials wanted to make sure they kept control of the game.

NBA News 2011: San Antonio Spurs Against Thunder

Oklahoma City Thunder Forward Kevin Durant at ...Image via Wikipedia
Record against Thunder: 3-0

Games left: 0

While there hasn't been too much talk of the Thunder this year as far as championships go, but ever since they acquired Kendrick Perkins they have become major contenders.

I do have to admit that the Thunder have a very nice team and a very dangerous team, I just can't see how they could defeat the Spurs.

Kevin Durant and Russel Westbrook are two of the best young players in the world and Perkins just happens to be one of the best defensive centers in the game.

They also have a relatively nice cast around those players and a cast that can be lightning fast running down the court. This could actually swing either way and will depend on how Westbrook and Durant play.

NBA News 2011: Andrew Bynum: In 2 Years, Will He Be the NBA's Best Big Man?

Andrew Bynum playing with the Los Angeles LakersImage via Wikipedia
Is Andrew Bynum on his way to becoming the most dominant basketball big-man in America?  I believe he is.

If he can stay healthy, then the lake is the limit.  He’ll roll as far as the mighty waters will carry him.  He’s been showing flashes of dominance since he was 18 years old.

I saw him swatting Kendrick Perkins’ shot into the crowd during the last game against Boston in Beantown.  I believe Bynum’s play prompted Danny Ainge to find other options at center—even though Shaq and Jermaine O’Neal are there.

Bynum’s defense forced the Celtics to make roster moves in hopes of contending with him in the Finals.  I can see Ainge waking up in a cold sweat after seeing visions of Bynum’s steady progression to a dominant force.

By the time the NBA Finals roll around this year—Ainge was probably thinking—Bynum will be a one man wrecking crew in the lane.

NBA News 2011: Lakers, Celtics rekindle rivalry

The opening tipoff of Game 2 of the 2008 NBA F...Image via Wikipedia
After winning the last two championships, the Lakers have been casting about for inspiration all season. West gave it to them -- prove me wrong, he was saying -- and he did so as the Celtics were on their way to Los Angeles for the first rematch since Game 7 last June.

It's hard to define the importance of regular-season meetings among title contenders. "Once they get between the lines, the outcome of that game makes all the difference in the world to those players," an NBA advance scout said this week, looking ahead to Boston's visit to L.A. on Sunday afternoon. "But two nights later, if the Lakers are playing Minnesota or whoever, they're realizing that game means as much in the standings as the game against the Celtics."

The Lakers and Celtics have met in the Finals five times since 1984, and the outcomes of their regular-season meetings haven't always been helpful:

2009-10: Split regular-season series, L.A. won Finals 4-3
2007-08: Boston swept 2-0, Boston won Finals 4-2
1986-87: L.A. swept 2-0, L.A. won Finals 4-2
1984-85: Split series, L.A. won Finals 4-2
1983-84: L.A. swept 2-0, Boston won Finals 4-3

In the NBA's most important rivalry, each team is most concerned by its own prospects. The Celtics are beginning to work center Kendrick Perkins back into their rotation after losing him to a major knee injury in Game 6 in L.A. They've earned the East's best record despite injuries that have sidelined a half-dozen members of their rotation for at least nine games each. Their focus has been remarkable even as coach Doc Rivers complains of "slippage" in their execution because he has been making do with a different mixture week after week.

NBA News 2010: Are the Boston Celtics Too Old To Win an NBA Championship?

Buddy-Icon von Eric Kilby Cavs @ Celtics 10/28...Image via Wikipedia
The Boston Celtics are old. In signing Jermaine O'Neal and Shaquille O'Neal they certainly didn't make themselves any younger. On the other hand they have some key players that are relatively young in Rajon Rondo and Kendrick Perkins, and they went to the NBA finals last year. The question then becomes, are they too old now? For that matter, how old is too old?

Jordan took some time off to play baseball. Garnett played out of high school. We're learning that 35 isn't the same when you're talking about kids who came out of high school. When I looked at minutes, I found out that Garnett has played more minutes already than Jordan or Scottie Pippen did during their entire careers, and he's about 5,000 more than either had played during the finals.

Ray Allen also already has more minutes played than those two had when they won. Pippen will be about even with where they were at the end of the season. So, in terms of age they might not be too old, but in terms of minutes played by a nucleus of players, I don't know if there's a group with that many miles on its tires.

In the end I don't know whether it can be said that they can't win, but it certainly is a valid question mark. Just because it hasn't been done doesn't mean it can't be done. But the fact it hasn't been done should indicate that history is against them.

A lot will probably depend on how much the Celtics can get from Rondo, and how well Perkins returns from his injury.

NBA News 2010: Who Has the Best Bench in the League?

ShaqImage via Wikipedia
Still, for teams battling injuries, there's nothing that helps more than having legitimate depth at each position. The Portland Trail Blazers managed to stay relevant last season despite constant injury trouble because of the depth they had; now, with everyone back healthy, Portland's bench will be one of the best in the league.

When Kendrick Perkins comes back in February, the Celtics could also contend for the best bench in the league honor.  Shrek and Donkey will be joined by Shaquille O'Neal and Jermaine O'Neal, two former $100 million big men; Marquis Daniels, who's a year removed from averaging 13.6 points and 31.5 minutes per game for Indiana; and Delonte West, a defensively-minded guard who started his career back with Boston in 2004.

NBA News 2010: Can Jermaine O'Neal Offer Anything to the Celtics Front Line?

Jermaine O'Neal playing with the Miami HeatImage via Wikipedia
Jermaine O'Neal is far removed from the days where he averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds a game, earning nearly $20 million/year for his efforts. In fact, two years ago with Miami, he appeared so lifeless on the court that people actually began mistaking him for a walking corpse.

O'Neal revived his play somewhat last year, although he immediately reverted into walking corpse mode in the playoffs (4.2 points and 5.6 rebounds/game in the Heat's five-game loss to the Celtics).

NBA News 2010: Lakers 'still haven't beaten our starting 5,' Doc says

Rivers at the championship parade of the 2008 ...Image via WikipediaDoc Rivers came back to the Celtics because he wanted to make one more run at it with this group, he believed that this unit had one more title in it.
Of course, there are a couple obstacles to that. For one, there's that Laker team that just beat the Celtics in the finals.
But Rivers still believes Boston was the better team when healthy, as he told John Thompson when he was on ESPN 980 in Washington D.C.
They still have not beaten our starting five. Our starting five against the Lakers starting five has a ring. Tell him don't forget that. We will be back strong and Perk (Kendrick Perkins) will be there next year if there's a game seven."
I hate the "what if" injury game. Doc, I'll counter your "what if Perkins was healthy for Game 7?" with a "What if Andrew Bynum had been healthy the entire series?" The what if game is circular.
But before Boston can worry about the Lakers, the Celtics have to get out of the East. And we all know that Miami is going to be good, including Rivers, but he wonders about their defense.

NBA News 2010: Celtics' Rondo is too much for Lakers

Rajon Rondo, the 21st pick of the Boston CelticsImage via WikipediaLOS ANGELES – When Oscar Robertson was 23 years old he averaged 30.8 points, 11.4 assists and 12.5 rebounds for the Cincinnati Royals. That was in 1961-62.
Since then, players such as Jason Kidd have turned the triple-double into a monogram, even though 11 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists is sometimes an artificial feat by a player who always possesses the ball.
Rajon Rondo had 18 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in Boston's 103-94 Game 2 victory Sunday, the Lakers' second home playoff loss in eight series, and possibly a Finals-changing development, considering that the Celtics and Lakers are tied 1-1 with Games 3-4-5 in Boston.
Those who saw what he did to the Lakers must realize the helplessness of numbers, and the power of Rondo.
Derek Fisher uncoils for the customary 3-pointer to the solar plexus, and Rondo does what you never see anyone do. He sneaks in from behind and blocks it.
Kobe Bryant thinks he has saved a ball on the sideline and Rondo moves in – he must have a silencer on his shoes, because no one seems to hear him coming. He gets inside Bryant and steals the ball, and then absorbs Bryant's fifth foul, even though nobody without a whistle actually saw one.
And the Lakers, stretched uncomfortably by Ray Allen's record-breaking threes, give Rondo's clunky shot all the room they can with 1:50 left. Rondo bangs it home to put Boston up five.
If Rondo masters that part, that will be known as competitive imbalance. Blessed with huge hands which dangle at his kneecaps, plus Porsche acceleration and nonstop imagination, Rondo has been the decisive pressure point in all three Eastern series.
But his singular gift might be the knack of seeing plays quicker than anyone else. Pau Gasol blocked a shot on Boston's next possession but did so gently, and didn't snatch the rebound. Rondo did and dumped in the go-ahead layup before anyone could trace his footsteps.
"Getting the loose balls, I think that was a key for me personally," Rondo said, shrugging. "That play on Kobe, I thought he was dribbling extremely high, and I thought I could make a stab on the ball."
So which Laker should guard the 21st player picked in the first round of the 2006 draft?
It is usually Bryant, but in Game 1 Rondo lost Bryant and dived inside for three back-door baskets. Here, he streaked right to the hoop whenever anybody but Bryant guarded him.
But then Allen was open so much, and so unerring, that Bryant eventually had to check him. Not that it matters; Boston's battery of picks means Allen can run his designated Laker into all the furniture.
With 5:43 left, Bryant scored over Allen and the Lakers led by three. They did not score on their next six trips downcourt. The Celtics scored in eight of their next nine, and Rondo got Bryant tangled in Kevin Garnett's screen and flashed right to the hoop before any Laker noticed.
That began the run, and the Celtics ran out of Staples Center before any recounts or appeals.
The Lakers got strafed at the 3-point line but could have overcome it. They were outscored by 10 in the paint (and Rondo had much to do with it) even though they got early fouls on Garnett, Kendrick Perkins and Glen Davis. None fouled out, and the Lakers wasted a precious 39-minute game from Andrew Bynum. He will have only one day of rest before Games 4 and 5.
The ball got to Bryant and stuck there far too much, and the Celtics rarely let him roam to the opposite side. He missed 12 of 20, with five turnovers and only three free throw tries.
"We didn't get the ball often enough to our big guys, or in good enough position," Phil Jackson said.
The Celtics got eight field goals from Paul Pierce in these two games. They got eight rebounds and one blocked shot by Kevin Garnett.
