Spurs forward Stephen Jackson left San Antonio's game against the Knicks after spraining his right ankle when he crashed into a waitress working the sideline in front of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Jackson was hurt in the first quarter Thursday night when he shot a 3-pointer from the corner. The shot missed and he stepped backward out of bounds and onto the waitress, who was kneeling in front of courtside seats.

It was unclear if the waitress was serving Bloomberg, who was seen eating a box of popcorn shortly after the play.

Jackson played just 2 minutes, 50 seconds, going 0-for-2 from the field, both three-point attempts.

NBA News 2012: Clippers advance, knock out Grizzlies

Chris Paul played with an aching right hip and Blake Griffin's sprained left knee stiffened up during the game. If the Clippers were truly a two-man team, then they would have been in trouble facing elimination by the Memphis Grizzlies.

Good thing the guys on the Clippers' bench want to keep playing.

Kenyon Martin's 23-footer put the Clippers ahead to start a fourth quarter in which backups scored 25 of their 27 points, helping Los Angeles' other NBA team beat Memphis 82-72 Sunday and advance to the Western Conference semifinals.

''Our bench was our MVP,'' Clippers guard Randy Foye said. ''They realized what they had to do. We had a lot of guys hurt, so we just continued to grind.''

The Clippers reserves outscored Memphis' bench 41-11 to help Los Angeles clinch its first playoff series since 2006 and only the franchise's third overall. They also helped the Clippers avoid becoming the ninth NBA team to blow a 3-1 lead in a best-of-seven series and now they head to San Antonio for a second round starting Tuesday night.

Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said they will regroup Monday and focus on the Spurs then. He wanted his team to enjoy the series win for a little bit.

''But obviously another big challenge for us,'' Del Negro said.

Chris Paul scored 19 points despite his strained right hip flexor, and he was the only starter to score in the fourth quarter. Paul was so confident of victory he bought plane tickets for his wife and son to San Antonio on Saturday.

''I felt like we should have won earlier,'' Paul said. ''But it doesn't matter. As long as you win, I think it is a step in the right direction for our franchise.''

NBA News 2011: Spurs welcome Leonard after rare Draft-day move

George Hill of the San Antonio SpursImage via Wikipedia
Kawhi Leonard is the kind of player the San Antonio Spurs like: he's a character guy who plays defense and comes from a winning program.

It's how the Spurs got him that was unusual.

Acquiring the 6-foot-7 forward in the NBA draft required trading up, and that meant parting with backup point guard George Hill, who became a favorite of coach Gregg Popovich during his three seasons in San Antonio and was considered a future franchise star.

It was arguably the biggest draft-day move for the Spurs since 1997, when they had the No. 1 pick and drafted Tim Duncan.

"I guess I just fitted their type of scheme," Leonard said Saturday.

No doubts there.

NBA News 2011: Marc Gasol Off The Market?

NEW ORLEANS - MARCH 03: Zach Randolph #50, Mi...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
The Grizzlies are finally stepping up to the plate, first by overpaying Rudy Gay to make sure he stayed in town, and more recently by inking Zach Randolph to a contract extension. Randolph was understandably concerned about what the might be on the horizon for his team before he committed the bulk of his prime to Memphis, and he liked what he heard. First and foremost, his front court mate - Marc Gasol - is expected to be re-signed, as well.

"It feels good to know I'm going to be in Memphis for another four years. It feels real good. A little bit at the beginning of the year I was distracted by it (the lack of a new contract). I put it out of my mind about halfway through the season. I haven't been thinking about it lately until now. I'm glad that it's done and I'm staying here. But I definitely want Marc here with us."

It is precisely the front court pairing of Randolph and Gasol that has made Memphis a tough customer all season. Even as they've dealt with injuries at other positions, the fact that they have two big men who patrol the paint and puts points and rebounds on the board in bunches has helped them stay in the playoff chase. The two combined for 49 points and 23 rebounds in Game 1 in San Antonio, which the Grizzlies won 101-98.

NBA News 2011: The best trade the Lakers didn’t make pays dividends

Andrew Bynum playing with the Los Angeles LakersImage via Wikipedia
Anthony is a transcendent talent and one of the best basketball players in the world. But all of his immense abilities wouldn’t have necessarily made the Lakers any better than if they had lost Bynum in the trade.

Bynum had three rebounds in the first 74 seconds of the game, include a rim-rattling dunk to start off the Lakers’ scoring. It was a statement the Spurs would struggle inside — and they did.

His height, especially when combined with Pau Gasol, remains the Lakers’ biggest single advantage over the Spurs. And it was never more apparent than in the first quarter, when Bynum personally matched the Spurs in rebounding and sparked them to a 17-8 advantage.

Although he scored only four points (on two shots), he grabbed 17 rebounds and blocked three shots and altered several more. And those numbers were accomplished in 26 minutes, 34 seconds as he was hampered at times with foul trouble.

“His length is superior,” San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. “So is Pau. Together, they are a heck of a defensive tandem down there. They do a great job and that’s why they are NBA champions the last two years.”

NBA News 2011: NBA Retrospective DeJuan Blair

DeJuan Blair of the San Antonio SpursImage via Wikipedia
DeJuan Blair, 6-7, PF/C, San Antonio Spurs, 1989
8.5 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 1.2 steals, 1.5 turnovers, 50% FG, 66% FT

Expected to be drafted in the lottery by most analysts in the 2009 NBA Draft, Blair surprisingly fell to the 37th pick due to concerns surrounding the long-term viability of his surgically repaired knees. As they've made a habit of doing in the past decade, the Spurs pounced on the opportunity by picking up Blair, who's yet to miss a game in his NBA career.

Outlook

Looking forward, it's hard to imagine Blair developing into much more than he currently is now, a strange thing to say for a player just 21 years old that is already starting for the best team in the league. The problem for Blair is the two areas where he shows the most capacity for improvement – post defense and mid-range shooting – are areas he has shown little to no learning curve in since he emerged on the national scene his freshman season at Pittsburgh. That said, there is precedent for hard-working big men completely reinventing segments of their game early in their NBA careers, with Glen Davis (post defense) and David Lee (mid-range shooting) being two recent examples.

In order for Blair to take his game to the next level and place himself among the league's most impactful role players, he's going to need to put in the work in those two areas, and all the signs suggest he has the requisite work ethic to do so. Regardless, even if he doesn't do that, he's already on the path to a very productive career, and he's in the perfect situation to put his unique talents to work, playing off San Antonio's Big Three. As long as he can remain healthy, Blair has already established a very high floor for the rest of his career., and is clearly one of the biggest steals in the draft over the past few years.

NBA News 2010: Spurs' Tony Parker signs new contract

SAN ANTONIO -- Tony Parker swore he didn't want to leave the Spurs, and he has a new contract to finally prove it.

The Spurs signed Parker to a multiyear extension Saturday that preserves their three-time NBA champion core of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and the star point guard, and puts an abrupt end to what would've undoubtedly been a season of speculation.

The extension is for $50 million over four years, according to Parker's website.

Rumors swirled over the summer about where the 28-year-old former All-Star might end up after this season, but Parker has insisted that he and his wife, actress Eva Longoria Parker, wanted to remain in San Antonio.

"I didn't mind playing through the year and be a free agent," Parker said. "But it was my first option and for my wife was to stay in San Antonio."

The French star entered his 10th season saying this was likely the Big Three's last chance at a fourth championship together because of Duncan's age. Duncan will be 35 when the playoffs begin, and the final year of his contract is threatened by a potential lockout next season.

NBA News 2010: Tiago Splitter and the Spurs: A Match Made in Heaven

Tiago Splitter warming up in the second game o...Image via Wikipedia
As a huge Spurs fan, I was very excited to find out that Tiago Splitter was finally making his way to San Antonio and it couldn't be at a better time. Watching Splitter represent Brazil, and doing so with the grace of a 6'10" gazelle, has made me even more excited.

Splitter comes to an experienced, championship team with an organization known for being one of the elite. With all the veterans resting up this off-season and not representing their home country in the World Championships this summer, everybody should be at one hundred percent. At least the big three.

The move will especially help "The Big Fundamental" Tim Duncan and his aging knees. Duncan is not a true center but he has been playing one since David Robinson retired in 2003. He can now play his natural position of power forward and will even get some more resting time with Splitter on the roster.

NBA News 2010: Are the San Antonio Spurs Done?

The San Antonio Spurs are greeted by President...Image via Wikipedia
The Spurs did make one major addition this season in the form of the 7-foot Brazilian Tiago Splitter, who signed a three-year, $10.5 million deal with San Antonio this summer. Splitter should provide Tim Duncan some much needed relief, as Antonio McDyess and DeJuan Blair wouldn't be able to shoulder the full load without Duncan.

If George Hill, Blair and Splitter end up being a much needed infusion of youth into San Antonio, those three and the Parker-Duncan-Ginobili trio give the Spurs a heck of a core of six players that could truly compete for a championship. But if the injury bug strikes the Spurs, the Duncan-Parker-Ginobili trio, with Parker's contract expiring after next season, could end up having its last go-around this year.

NBA News 2010: Brazilian Import: Introducing Tiago Splitter To the NBA

Tiago Splitter warming up in the second game o...Image via Wikipedia
In the not too distant past, there was an influx of talented, highly-skilled, foreign NBA ready big men arriving on American shores ready to prove themselves in the best league in the world. The likes of Pau Gasol, Dirk Nowitzki, Yao Ming, Nene, and Andrew Bogut have become proven commodities for their respective teams, if not the face of their franchise. The combination of a lack of NBA ready big men born within our own borders, and the tantalizing prospect of finding the next Dirk Nowitzki or Pau Gasol, has seen NBA scouts scour foreign gymnasiums and playgrounds in search of the next international superstar.

Tiago is a prototypical Greg Popovich type of player, and will fit perfectly into San Antonio’s system. He adds much needed youth and depth to the Spurs frontline, and will make life much easier for Tim Duncan.

He has the ability on offense to hit the open jumper, finish inside with either hand, run the high-post offense with his remarkable pinpoint passing ability, set solid screens, and should excel in running the pick and roll with pick and roll extraordinaire Tony Parker.

On defense, Splitter will bump and grind until the final whistle, and fight for any and every rebound in his vicinity, much like his new teammate DeJuan Blair. While he is not a shot blocker, he is an excellent man to man defender, and his combination of speed and quickness will help on defensive rotations as well as defending the pick and roll. He seldom makes mistakes on this end of the court.

NBA News 2010: Where Does Derek Fisher Stand Among History's Greatest LA Lakers?

A photo of Derek Fisher modified by SRE.K.A.L.24.Image via WikipediaLos Angeles Lakers' point guard Derek Fisher will never be confused for Magic Johnson despite the fact they both play the same position and hold the same number of NBA championships.
Fisher's abilities pale in comparison to Magic's, and he will never be able to capture the public's imagination in the manner that Magic did, but Fisher has managed to carve out his own place in Lakers' lore.
Fisher's 9.0 points per game and 40 percent shooting from the field through the course of his career will never hold anyone in awe, but within those numbers are moments that have made Fisher a legend.
What Lakers' fan will ever forget Fisher's return from a foot injury just before the 2001 playoffs, and the 51 percent shooting percentage from three-point range on the way to his second championship?
How about Fisher's dramatic heave with 0.4 seconds left on the clock against San Antonio in 2004? That shot didn't lead to a championship for the Lakers, but it did help them reach the Finals that year.
Most people will never forget the tense Game Seven contest that clinched the championship for the Lakers, but if it were not for Fisher's heroics in the fourth quarter of Game Three, then Game Seven may not have taken place.
It's easy to point to those instances as highlights of Fisher's career, but the intangibles and leadership Fisher brings to the Lakers are just as important.
Fisher is the elder statesman for Los Angeles and the only player who will stand toe-to-toe with Bryant when it comes to matters concerning the team.
The fact that Bryant listens to Fisher regardless of whether he agrees or not shows the type of respect Fisher commands, and although the relationship between the two has been tense at times, it is built on the solid foundation of numerous seasons together.
However, Fisher does own those five championships, and the integrity he has displayed throughout his career should hold some weight when comparing him to other Lakers' greats.
Fisher no longer possesses the quickness that made him a pesky defender, and his jumper no longer has the lift it once did, but Fisher has managed to remain a valuable member of the roster.
