The Atlanta Hawks sent guard Willie Green to the Los Angeles Clippers in a sign-and-trade deal that gave the Hawks the rights to Greek center Sofoklis Schortsanitis, the Hawks announced Monday.

Schortsanitis was selected by the Clippers in the second round (34th overall) of the 2003 NBA Draft. He signed a three-year contract with Athens club Panathinaikos earlier this month, so he is unlikely to join the Hawks this season. However, the Hawks gain a trade exception in the amount of Green’s first-year salary with the Clippers.

Green, 31, played in 53 regular season games for Atlanta in 2011-12, averaging 7.6 points and 1.5 rebounds.

The Hornets, Suns and Timberwolves have agreed to a multiplayer trade sending 7-foot center Robin Lopez and forward Hakim Warrick from Phoenix to New Orleans, while moving forward Wesley Johnson and a first-round draft pick from Minnesota to Phoenix, a person familiar with the deal said.

The person told The Associated Press about the trade on condition of anonymity Wednesday because it has not been announced pending the completion of some routine logistical matters.

NBA News 2012: Blazers’ Lillard draws raves

The Portland Trail Blazers have made a plethora of moves since Neil Olshey took over as general manager on June 5, none more important than taking Damian Lillard with the sixth pick in the draft.

Lillard, a 6-3, 195-pound point guard out of Weber State, stole the show at the Las Vegas Summer League with his sterling play, averaging 26.5 points and sharing league most valuable player honors with Memphis guard Josh Selby. Lillard is expected to step right in and start for the Blazers next season.

Portland has had summer league MVPs before. Qyntell Woods and Jerryd Bayless come to mind, and neither panned out with the Blazers. But Lillard is close to a can’t-miss prospect, according to those around the league.

“Lillard is going to be terrific,” Cleveland coach Byron Scott said.

“He has a very bright future ahead of him,” Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said. “He has a chance to be special.”

“He plays the pro game — great speed, no hurry, knows how to play,” Boston coach Doc Rivers said. “He can shoot the ball, he can score when he wants to, but he also knows how to run a team. That’s nice.”

NBA News 2012: Beasley admits mistakes, says 'I just want to win'

Michael Beasley says his marijuana issues are a thing of the past, that he's ready to show the Phoenix Suns that their support for him is warranted.

The 6-foot-10 forward signed a three-year, $18 million contract with Phoenix on Friday, then faced questions about his past head-on at a news conference.

''I realize 10 minutes of feeling good is not really worth putting my life and my career and my legacy in jeopardy,'' he said, ''so I'm confident to say that that part of my career, that part of my life, is over and won't be coming back.''

In June 2011, Beasley was ticketed for possessing marijuana and speeding in a Minneapolis suburb. He also has acknowledged that while playing for Miami, he twice violated the NBA's drug policy and entered a treatment facility in 2009.

Beasley credits working with former NBA player Norm Nixon for getting his priorities straight.

''I've really realized my potential,'' Beasley said. ''I've really realized what I can do.''

Suns general manager Lance Blanks was effusive in his praise of Beasley's honesty as well as the unquestionable talent he brings to the rebuilding Phoenix organization.

''Regardless of his past and regardless of any thoughts that people may have,'' Blanks said, ''we are excited, I know I am excited, to embrace everything he is about and most importantly wants to be as a Phoenix Sun.''

Blanks and coach Alvin Gentry talked of Beasley's infectious personality.

''You're around him and you want to embrace him and you want him to do well,'' Gentry said. ''I think everybody here will be pulling for him.''

Beasley, the second pick overall in the 2008 draft, played his first two seasons with Miami and the last two with Minnesota. He became a free agent when the Timberwolves declined an $8 million option to keep him.

There is no doubt that Beasley brings immense talent, whether he plays the small or power forward position. The former Kansas State player averaged 15.1 points per game in his four NBA seasons. He has 10 career games of 30 or more points, nine of them the past two seasons, topped by a career-high 42 against Sacramento on Nov. 10, 2010.

The Suns sent Beasley a text shortly after midnight the day that contact with free agents was allowed and followed up with a trip to Los Angeles. The attention was a major factor in Beasley choosing Phoenix.

''I'd like to thank the organization for believing in me,'' he said, ''giving me another chance, a better opportunity to grow as a person and a player. Like Lance said, I kind of want to take my past head-on. What happened, it happened. It happened in a growing process. I'm still a young man. I'm still learning today. The mistakes I made in the past are hopefully behind me. Hopefully, the Suns organization can be patient with my growing process. I'm just excited to get a start, excited to play basketball.''

After playing in the more rigid systems of Miami and Minnesota, Beasley looks forward to running the court with the up-tempo Suns.

NBA News 2012: Darko Milicic interests Bulls

next life of chicago bullsnext life of chicago bulls (Photo credit: Lady Ema)
Cornstein confirmed the Bulls' interest to ESPNChicago, indicating that he was trying to explore different landing spots for his client. Milicic was amnestied by the Minnesota Timberwolves last week.

The timing of the Bulls' interest is curious given they are going to have to decide on Omer Asik's future in the coming days. Asik agreed to a three-year offer sheet with the Houston Rockets earlier this month and plans to sign it later this week.

The Houston Chronicle reported Wednesday that the Rockets have waived Jon Leuer and Jerome Jordan, clearing the way for Asik to sign the offer sheet. Once it becomes official, the Bulls will have three days to decide to match.

If the Bulls match the Asik offer sheet, they would be on the hook for an almost $15 million cap hit in the final year of the deal. That would severely limit them in a summer in which Luol Deng comes off the books and Carlos Boozer figures to be amnestied.

Bulls officials have not made any public statement regarding Asik, continually saying they wouldn't until they saw the official offer sheet. It appears they are about to be on the clock. If they choose not to match, Millicic will be an option.

The No. 2 pick of the 2003 NBA draft by the Detroit Pistons, Milicic has averaged 6.0 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks over nine seasons with five teams.

NBA News 2012: Rockets' Owner Leslie Alexander Expects Lin To Help Attract Free Agents

Jeremy LinJeremy Lin (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Rockets' owner Leslie Alexander expects Jeremy Lin to aid in Houston’s effort to land a top free agent.

“I love it,” Alexander said of the Lin signing. “I think it’s great for the city of Houston. It’s great for the fans. I think a team needs to have that attention to attract free agents and do what we have to do to win. It helps. It always helps (the business), but the real reason is it helps to attract free agents. They’ll want to play with Jeremy, but also they want to be someplace they will be on TV, they can market themselves, all that stuff.”

Alexander believes Lin will fit nicely into the Rockets’ offense.

“I think he’s going to be a great addition for the team,” Alexander said. “I think he’s going to be a great player in the league – very good to great.

“It was very risky and very hard to do. It worked out in our favor, thank God. We changed the team completely from last year. It’s almost a whole new team. You can see in summer league how good the young guys are. I think the future is really, really good.”

The Blazers have officially matched the four-year, $46.5 million offer sheet Nicolas Batum signed with the Wolves.

Portland had until midnight on Wednesday to match the contract.

"Paul wasn't letting anyone -- especially David Kahn -- steal Nic," one source said. "Period. You can't do a sign-and-trade if the trade part simply isn't an option."

The Charlotte Bobcats have been awarded center Brendan Haywood off waivers from Dallas.

Haywood, who grew up in Greensboro and played collegiately at North Carolina - the same alma mater as owner Michael Jordan - was cut loose by the Mavericks using the amnesty clause.

An 11-year NBA veteran, the 7-foot Haywood helps fills a void at center.

Haywood has played in 733 career games for the Wizards and Mavericks with 531 starts, averaging 7.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 23.7 minutes. His career field-goal percentage of .534 ranks seventh among active players and 28th in NBA history.

The New York Knicks decided Saturday night not to match the Toronto Raptor’s offer sheet to restricted free agent guard Landry Fields.

The Raptors signed Fields, 24, to a three-year contract worth nearly $20 million Fields on Wednesday. The Knicks had until Saturday to match it.

The 2010 second-round draft pick from Stanford averaged 8.8 points and 2.6 assists last season.

The final year of his new deal reportedly includes a sharp pay increase, similar to what the Houston Rockets offered restricted free agent Omer Asik, who played with the Chicago Bulls.

The Knicks reportedly also may not match the offer sheet given to popular point guard Jeremy Lin by the Houston Rockets.

NBA News 2012: Dwight Howard Ready To Commit To Extension With Lakers

English: Dwight Howard, Orlando Magic, 2008–09English: Dwight Howard, Orlando Magic, 2008–09 (Photo credit: Wikipedia)Dwight Howard has long coveted the Brooklyn Nets as his next landing spot, but after a summer filled with daily rumors of four-team trade proposals, the six-time All-Star has moved on from his Big Apple infatuation and is locked in on joining the Los Angeles Lakers, according to sources.

The Lakers, Orlando Magic and Cleveland Cavaliers are reportedly discussing a three-team trade that would send Howard to the Lakers, Andrew Bynum to the Cavaliers, while the Magic would receive Anderson Varejao and multiple draft picks.

Howard has always been impressed with the Lakers’ winning tradition and intrigued with the off-court opportunities that come with playing in Los Angeles.

Questions about Howard's role with the team, however, became an early concern for the three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year. Howard has since moved on from those concerns and is confident he will be an integral part of a team that will have a chance to compete immediately for a championship, according to sources.

The Lakers are reportedly ready to make the trade, but first need assurance from Howard that he will commit to the team long-term. Sources say Howard is “excited” about the opportunity to play for the Lakers and will re-sign with the team when his contract expires at the end of the 2012-13 season.

NBA News 2012: Hornets match offer to keep Eric Gordon

Charlotte Hornets logoCharlotte Hornets logo (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Guard Eric Gordon will be returning to New Orleans after the Hornets matched Phoenix’s maximum-salary offer of $58 million over four years.

“Eric is a phenomenal player that we are thrilled to have in our organization”, Hornets general manager Dell Demps said. “We thank Tom and Gayle Benson for making this possible with their commitment to the team, our fans and the New Orleans Community.

Gordon said he was open to returning, although he wanted to explore his options as a restricted free agent and eventually said Phoenix “is just where my heart is right now.” But the Hornets had said all along that they planned to match any offer.

“There is always a business element to the NBA when dealing with contracts but I never lost my appreciation for the New Orleans fans,” said Gordon. “I look forward to giving my very best on the court this season to make our team successful.”

Gordon, acquired last December in the Chris Paul trade, led the team with 20.6 points per game to go along with 3.4 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists in nine games in his first season with New Orleans.

NBA News 2012: Lakers Exploring Sign-and-Trade for Courtney Lee?

(Image credit: Getty Images via @daylife)
As options continue to emerge for the Lakers, the plot begins to thicken on which direction the storied franchise might go in, with some serious upgrading needed for the bench heading into next season.

Obviously, Lee is an intriguing acquisition for the Lakers as it gives them a promising young talent that can come off the bench to give Kobe Bryant some much needed rest. At 26 years-old, Lee has a bright future ahead of him in the NBA, and with the right situation he might be able to make a name for himself next season.

Another free agent option that the Lakers may also be exploring in terms of a sign-and-trade is O.J. Mayo. Players that may be involved in such a trade with the Memphis Grizzlies or Houston Rockets are Steve Blake and Josh McRoberts. The expiring contract of McRoberts is reportedly getting some of interest. With both of these players bringing youth to an aging Lakers squad, they’ve definitely perked the interest of Kupchak and company.

Last season, Lee averaged 11.4 points per game while shooting 40 percent from beyond the arc. Lee is strictly a scorer without much skill to distribute the basketball. Lee’s defense is another perk to a potential deal, but the Lakers are focusing on the fact that he can become a scoring threat off the bench that has been sorely missed after the departure of Lamar Odom.

In comparison to Mayo, Lee may be considered the lesser of the two candidates, but that might not be the case. Despite Mayo being the bigger name, Lee had the better shooting percentage from the floor (43 percent), charity stripe (82 percent) and from three-point range (40 percent). In terms of scoring average, Lee and Mayo are fairly close in comparison at 11.4 to 12.6 points per game.

Acquiring Lee via sign-and-trade may also be a much more realistic option with so many teams in the running to land Mayo in free agency.

Another option the Lakers are also considering as a backup for Kobe that can provide some offense off the bench is veteran Grant Hill. Even at 39 years-old, Hill is getting a lot of interest around the league with the New York Knicks and Miami Heat also showing interest. The Lakers are currently the frontrunners to sign Hill at the veteran’s minimum, but the Knicks are said to be emerging as legitimate candidates as well.

NBA News 2012: Suns win rights to Scola

The Phoenix Suns were awarded the rights to Luis Scola on Sunday by submitting the highest bid for the free agent forward, according to multiple reports.

Scola was waived by the Rockets on Friday via the amnesty provision, and several teams, including Dallas and Cleveland, submitted bids for Scola, according to NBA.com.

The Suns had to submit a bid of at least $3.3 million per year for Scola, and commit $10 million over three years.

Scola, 32, averaged 15.5 points and 6.5 rebounds with Houston last season.

To make room, the Suns waived Josh Childress using the amnesty provision, the Arizona Republic reported.
