NBA News 2013: Celtics Trade For Jordan Crawford

The Boston Celtics ended up completing a trade a few hours before Thursday’s deadline, but no member of the Big Three was involved. Boston sent Leandro Barbosa and Jason Collins to the Washington Wizards for Jordan Crawford.

Barbosa, who tore his right ACL earlier this month, proved to be a nice trade chip with an affordable, expiring contract. There were whispers that the Celtics were floating Fab Melo in talks, but it was clear that Ernie Grunfeld didn’t want any future salary commitment.

Collins also has an expiring contract, while Crawford carries a $2.16 million salary for 2013-14 and can be issued a qualifying offer of $3.2 million in 14-15. It was expected that the Celtics would re-sign the Brazilian Blur, but Danny Ainge now will have some work to do with close to $72 million already committed for next season.

The Wizards essentially dealt Crawford for two bodies and a small amount of cap savings. Barbosa is still waiting for his MCL to calm down before undergoing surgery on his ACL and Collins will have Emeka Okafor, Nene and Kevin Seraphin ahead of him on the depth chart. The move accomplished two things for Grunfeld -- ridding himself of the somewhat enigmatic Crawford and saving more than $2 million next season. Washington now has a little more than $65 million committed to 11 players (including Trevor Ariza’s $7.7 million player option and the $7.8 million amnestied deal of Andray Blatche).

There may have been underlying issues between Crawford and Washington, but it’s somewhat surprising that they couldn’t turn him into some sort of tangible future asset. However, the Wizards have relied on better ball movement since John Wall returned from injury and a one-on-one player like Crawford simply doesn’t fit with that scheme. That made it clear the 24-year-old wasn’t a fit now or going forward.

Grunfeld himself mused that he couldn’t get much in return for Crawford, but in actuality he should have been able to land at least a late second-round pick. I mean, wouldn’t Melo (a project big man due $1.3 million next year) be at least something? Crawford has been an average NBA player over the last two seasons (at the very least in terms of PER).

NBA News 2013: Thunder reach deal to sign Derek Fisher

The Oklahoma City Thunder have reached agreement to sign veteran guard Derek Fisher for the remainder of the season, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Fisher arrived in Oklahoma City Sunday night and will sign his contract on Monday.

Fisher, 38, signed with the Thunder late last season and helped Oklahoma City make its push to the NBA Finals. He joined the Dallas Mavericks early this season and played nine games in December before suffering a knee injury. He asked the Mavericks to release him, so he could spend more time with his family.

The Thunder have room for another guard after trading Eric Maynor to the Portland Trail Blazers on Thursday. Reggie Jackson is receiving most of the backup point guard minutes behind Russell Westbrook.

Now that J.J. Redick is a Buck and is going to get a long-term deal from the team this summer, what happens to Monta Ellis and Brandon Jennings? They could be gone. Jennings hopes to land in Dallas via a free-agent deal this summer and the Mavs would love to get him, but he’s restricted.

NBA News 2013: Magic already gave away Howard’s number

Well, that didn’t take long.

The Orlando Magic waited all of half a season to give away Dwight Howard’s No. 12 jersey. Tobias Harris, a second-year small forward acquired in the J.J. Redick trade from the Milwaukee Bucks, has donned the jersey of the greatest player in franchise history.

Wait, what?

Howard is the Magic’s career leader in points, rebounds, blocks, minutes and, if you like advanced stats, win shares. He was the best player on the team for eight seasons. But then he whined until he was traded in the offseason to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Harris, 20, has scored 358 points in his NBA career, almost 11,200 fewer than Howard scored with the Magic. He has some potential as a scoring combo forward, sort of a poor man’s Carmelo Anthony, which he showed in his one season at Tennessee.

He wore No. 15 for the Bucks. That number is taken in Orlando by suspended forward Hedo Turkoglu, so he needed to make a switch. He chose as high-pressure a number as was available.

“I’ve heard a lot about that because it’s Dwight Howard’s number,” Harris told the Orlando Sentinel in an excellent feature.

Orlando hasn’t retired any former players’ numbers, and there’s no reason to expect the Magic to hang Howard’s number from the rafters until a few years after he retires. It may be time, though, to get up spots for Shaquille O’Neal, Penny Hardaway and Nick Anderson, the core of the 1995 Eastern Conference champions.

NBA News 2013: Thomas Robinson Traded To Rockets

English: Patrick Patterson following a game ag...
English: Patrick Patterson following a game against Clarion University (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Reuniting the Morris twins marked an unusual starting shot to the trade deadline and was immediately followed by a much bigger deal also involving the Rockets. Considering the fact that the trades were done concurrently (and likely will become a three-way when it hits the league office) I will evaluate it as such.

The Rockets' Perspective

I had been critical of Daryl Morey and the Rockets brass since the Draft because they had a stockpile of not that special power forward and not enough time to play them all. Well, that just got emphatically clarified. Losing Toney Douglas and Cole Aldrich makes them slightly shallower at those spots for this season, but means nearly nothing to the team moving forward. As such, it becomes a simpler trade for the future.

Effectively moving Patrick Patterson for Thomas Robinson (and some pieces) absolutely makes a ton of sense for a team that has had plenty of time to evaluate Patterson and his fit with what they have. Robinson has a ton of potential and possesses the additional benefit of two extra years of team control (Patterson hits restricted free agency in 2014 and Robinson in 2016). Losing Marcus Morris for a 2013 second round pick may make people balk but the net moves save the team about $1.5 million for next season, marking a necessary sacrifice for a team in the free agency sweepstakes this summer.

On top of that, I am intrigued to see what Houston does with Francisco Garcia and Tyler Honeycutt, who could absolutely contribute to a team set at the starting perimeter spots but lacking somewhat when it comes to swingman depth.

All in all, Houston made a smart trade of Patrick Patterson for Thomas Robinson while picking up some interesting assets and some valuable salary space for the 2013-14 season in the process. Well done.

Grade for Houston: A-

The Kings' Perspective

I like Patrick Patterson but worry that the difference in years under rookie deals could end up hurting Sacramento relatively soon. After all, having a player closer to his peak makes remarkably little sense for a team who should not be looking to win the rest of this season and likely cannot make much noise next year. He could help try [emphasis on try] to stabilize former Kentucky teammate DeMarcus Cousins, but that is not enough of a benefit to outweigh the other costs. Now is far too early to give up on Thomas Robinson, especially when doing so for a guy who helps them more at a less valuable time in the team’s progression.

The other issue I have with the deal is that Cole Aldrich will be an Unrestricted Free Agent this summer by virtue of his option year being declined, while Toney Douglas will be Restricted but is not that good and plays a position where the Kings actually do not need help from a rotation player. Trading a swingman like Garcia who can actually shoot could be a problem as well though it’s not too big a deal.

Grade for Sacramento: D+

The Suns' Perspective

Trading a solid second round pick for a talented enough guy like Marcus Morris is fine. I personally love early seconds (since they are so cheap), but Morris has enough time on his deal and fit with Phoenix to make it a reasonable choice.

Grade for Phoenix: B

The Milwaukee Bucks have acquired J.J. Redick from the Orlando Magic, according to a source.

The Bucks had also been pursuing a trade for Josh Smith, but are out of those talks.

The Bucks will send Doron Lamb, Tobias Harris and Beno Udrih to the Magic.

NBA News 2013: How the Grizzlies Cleared Over $16 Million

Memphis Grizzlies logo
Memphis Grizzlies logo (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The Memphis Grizzlies have cleared in the neighborhood of $16 million in a pair of deals that unloaded the contracts of Rudy Gay and Marreese Speights.

On Wednesday, Gay and Hamed Haddadi were sent to the Toronto Raptors.  The Raptors in turn sent Ed Davis, a 2013 second-round pick and cash to Memphis. The Detroit Pistons also sent Tayshaun Prince and Austin Daye to the Grizzlies, in return for Jose Calderon from Toronto.

Just over a week earlier, the Grizzlies sent Josh Selby, Wayne Ellington, Speights and a first-round pick to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Jon Leuer.

The Speights’ deal set up the Gay trade, which was structured as three transactions.

- When Speights was traded to Memphis, the Grizzlies attained a $4.3 million trade exception.  The Grizzlies used that exception to acquire Daye, who makes $2,958,077 this season.  Memphis is left with $1,241,923 remaining in the Speights exception.

- The Grizzlies traded Gay, who makes $16,460,538 this season, for Prince ($6,764,045) and Davis ($2,207,040).  With the two making a combined $8,971,085, Memphis also received a trade exception for the difference ($7,489,453).

- Haddadi was traded to the Raptors without any salary coming back in return, generating another Memphis trade exception ($1.3 million).

NBA News 2013: Andre Drummond believes he ‘could be great’

Detroit Pistons rookie center Andre Drummond wasn’t able to participate on Friday night in the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge with a back injury.  Selected by Shaquille O’Neal as part of Team Shaq, Drummond was on hand to talk about his rookie campaign.

“It’s great that the coaches really named me to be here and Shaq actually chose me as well with his third pick,” said Drummond, disappointed that he wasn’t able to play.  “It’s great being out here and great being noticed but I’m going to stick to being an assistant coach and stick alongside Shaq.”

Drummond is sidelined another three to five weeks with a stress fracture of the left lumbar vertebra.

Through 50 games, Drummond averaged 7.3 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.7 blocks a game.  The Pistons may have a special combination with forward/center Greg Monroe and Drummond, once the two fully develop.

Right now Drummond is just trying to heal and learn how he can impact the NBA game.

“I think from the first game, I think [Coach Lawrence Frank] can vouch for me too, I think from my first game up until now I’ve gotten better on a daily basis,” he said.  “I just work hard, that’s really what it comes down to – giving 100 percent every single day.”

Drummond was improving dramatically, prior to his injury.  In a recent one-point loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, he pulled down 11 boards and blocked four shot, while scoring nine points.  Drummond he’s just scratching the surface.

“I’m getting a glimpse of what I could be,” Drummond said.  “I’m not really going to get big-headed at all.  I just know that it’s all effort and energy and hard work that it’s going to take for me to be good.”

Drummond doesn’t want to settle on being just “good.”

“I think I could be great one day,” he said.

NBA News 2013: Michael Jordan Celebrates 50th Birthday

Michael Jordan
Michael Jordan (Photo credit: iccsports)

Michael Jordan’s 50th birthday falls on Sunday, the day of the 62nd N.B.A. All-Star Game.

It is fitting, given that Jordan always seemed to shine during the sport’s annual weekend showcase. He was selected to 14 All-Star teams, was named the game’s most valuable player three times and, in breathtaking fashion, won the 1988 dunk contest with an iconic slam in which he leapt from the free-throw line.

There has been no shortage of birthday homages to Jordan leading to his big day. Sports Illustrated put him on the cover (his 50th, incidentally) last week, “SportsCenter” will count down his 50 greatest moments, and Antawn Jamison declared that Jordan, even at 50, could still play in the N.B.A.

“No one would be talking about it if they didn’t know it would drive clicks and page views and attention,” said Melissa Isaacson, who covered the Bulls for The Chicago Tribune from 1990 through Jordan’s second retirement. “I don’t remember any of this for Magic Johnson or Larry Bird’s 50th birthday, but that’s the power of Michael Jordan.”

NBA News 2013: Irving takes James’ role as Cleveland king

Kyrie Irving
Kyrie Irving (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Had Kyrie Irving considered the scope of this stage he starred on, his All-Star weekend coming-out party may have never come to pass.

The eyeballs come from all angles and in record numbers in the NBA these days – people in 215 countries watching in 47 languages on televisions and tablets and laptops and the like. Irving, this 20-year-old prodigy who joined incredible company in becoming the seventh player to be an All-Star before his 21st birthday, is now a major player in this game that goes way beyond the game.

The business of basketball is booming these days, and the one-man brands of players like Irving are built in times like these. The Cleveland Cavalierspoint guard thrilled the masses in the Rising Stars game on Friday, won the three-point contest on Saturday and was ready to enjoy his newfound elite status in his first All-Star game on Sunday. All the while, the counter-intuitive notion that Miami’s LeBron James could return to Cleveland as a free agent in the summer of 2014 continued to grow, in large part, because Irving’s talent is tantalizing enough to make the Akron, Ohio native seriously consider going home again.

“He’s unbelievable,” James said about Irving’s coronation as new king of Cleveland. “He’ll be (among) the top two, top three best point guards in the league. He’s headed there already.

“He’s doing some great things right now. They should be excited about having him in Cleveland.”

Irving, who was voted in by the fans despite the Cavaliers’ 16-37 record, was synonymous with excitement all weekend long.

His ankle-breaking moves against Detroit’s Brandon Knight were the talk of the town on Friday night, and he was the star on Saturday night as well. During the championship round of the three-point contest, and with a jumping James cheering him on courtside, TNT commentator Kenny Smith said on the telecast, “This dude is trying to make a statement, man.”

NBA News 2013: Terrence Ross Wins NBA Dunk Contest

Terrence Ross wore the Vince Carter throwback. Then he followed in his Toronto Raptors predecessor’s footsteps.

Ross won the NBA All-Star weekend slam dunk contest Saturday night in a memorable final round against Utah Jazz forward and defending champion Jeremy Evans. Ross had the best first round in the event and followed through to become the first rookie to win since Josh Smith in 2005.

“It was very hard,” Evans said. “It is hard every year just because so much has been done and there’s only so much you can do in the air.”

“I feel blessed, but it’s still overwhelming,” Ross said. “I’m just trying to soak it all in.”

NBA News 2013: Cavaliers ready to make Greg Oden multi-year contract offer

Greg Oden
Greg Oden (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Why would Cleveland entertain a multi-year offer for a player who hasn’t stepped foot on an NBA court in more than three years? Good question. Positionally, there is a need. Big man Anderson Varejao has been struck by injuries in recent years and the only other center on the roster is rookie Tyler Zeller. The Cavaliers are armed with cap space and are clearly in a rebuilding mode; taking a flier on a big man with potential, even if he’s a long shot, is a nothing-to-lose proposition. Signing him soon would allow the Cavaliers to guide his rehabilitation and prepare him for next season; a team option for the third year would give them flexibility to cut bait if it didn’t work out or retain their asset if it did. All it really costs Cleveland is a roster spot.

Still, there are plenty of reasons to be skeptical of an Oden comeback: he was never consistently healthy during his four-plus seasons in Portland, microfracture surgeries are major surgeries, and he developed blood clots in his left ankle that were considered serious enough to delay his February 2012 surgery. Most damning, Blazers executives admitted following his latest surgeries that Oden was never cleared for full-contact, five-on-five play at any point following his 2009 fractured patella and that significant swelling and pain prevented him from advancing in his rehabilitation work. It’s admirable that he’s still pursuing a comeback after years of setbacks but any optimism regarding his future contributions needs to be couched in between thick layers of caution.

NBA 2013: Efficient LeBron playing at highest level yet

Washington Wizards v/s Miami Heat December 18,...
Washington Wizards v/s Miami Heat December 18, 2010 (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

After a recent Miami Heat practice in Washington, Ray Allen told the coaching staff he was skipping the bus ride and running back to the hotel.

LeBron James' ears perked up.

With that, the three-time NBA MVP went looking for his running shoes.

"LeBron said, `If you're going to do that, I'm going to do that too. I'm not going to be outdone by somebody else. I'm going to run,"' Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "So he gets very competitive with things like that. If other people are working on their game, he takes notice."

That approach must be working. James' game -- already considered among the best in the NBA -- might be better than ever right now.

He's made 37 of his last 47 shots over his last 111 minutes, a torrid 79-percent clip. For the season, he's shooting a career-best 56 percent so far, easily on pace for the sixth straight season of improvement in that department. His 3-point shooting, at 42 percent this season, is much improved. He's shooting 70 percent inside the paint.

"I want to continue to push the button, continue to get better, maximize my potential and not waste an opportunity," James said.

The numbers go on and on. He's averaging 26.9 points this season. According to STATS LLC, only five players in NBA history have averaged that many points while shooting at least 56 percent over a full season. Maybe that's why Heat guard Dwyane Wade marvels when talking about James these days, saying "every year, it seems like he does the amazing."

"Numbers don't lie," James said.

At least, they don't in this case. After winning his third MVP award, second Olympic gold medal and first NBA championship, James said he wanted to get even better.

"It's kind of like, where is the bar for this guy? Does he have a bar?" Wade said. "And I'm glad that he's doing all this while he's in a Miami Heat uniform."

Magic rookie forward Andrew Nicholson has been chosen as a replacement for the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge game at the All-Star weekend in Houston.

Nicholson replaces Detroit Pistons center Andre Drummond, who can't play because of a back injury.

Nicholson has appeared in 48 games this season for Orlando and made his 14th start against Portland on Sunday night. The 19th overall pick in last year's draft entered the game averaging 7.6 points and 3.5 rebounds.

His scoring average is 10th among rookies this season.

Nicholson, who will play for Shaquille O'Neal's "Team Shaq", joins Orlando teammate and second-year center Nikola Vucevic, who was previously selected for the game. Vucevic will be playing on Charles Barkley's "Team Chuck".

NBA News 2013: James Harden enters break with Rockets hot

James Harden’s head will be on a swivel long before the NBA All-Star Game finally tips off on Sunday.

As the Houston Rockets’ lone All-Star and the unofficial host of the festivities that will take place in his team’s town, he’ll be pulled a few dozen different ways for appearances, interviews, photo-shoots and — last but certainly not least — his job as a coach in the celebrity game on Friday. But considering his young-and-upcoming team is still in need of the sort of talent that will be in ample supply at the event, he’ll leave some time for the sort of recruiting effort that is tailor-made for this annual, star-studded scene.

“I’ll do a little bit of recruiting during the All-Star break, but my main focus is on just trying to get this team focused on every single game, every practice,” Harden, whose team has significant salary cap space that can be used this summer if they don’t do a major deal before the Feb. 21 trade deadline, told USA TODAY Sports on Sunday.

“I can’t worry about who we want to recruit and things like that. … For the most part, we’re trying to make the playoffs.”
