Now that the Dallas Mavericks have won the 2011 NBA Championship, it is apparently time to start making predictions for next year. If Las Vegas is correct, the Miami Heat will win it all next year, and they will beat out the team with the second-best odds. That team, according to Sin City, is the Los Angeles Lakers.
Picking the Lakers as a potential title contender is hardly a stretch, given their success over the last few seasons. The roster is going to be largely the same, and if the Lakers had not run into a red-hot Mavericks team, Los Angeles might have been in the Finals this year. Of course, the odds are being made on the assumption that the NBA does not have any sort of work stoppage like the NFL is currently experiencing.
As noted by local sports guys Mason & Ireland, there are other trendy picks on the short list of championship contenders. Mason likes the Chicago Bulls and the Oklahoma City Thunder to do better than the Lakers next year. Those picks are hardly profound given the success of those teams this year and the general belief that the Thunder and Bulls are on the rise. What is interesting is that few people seem to be giving the Mavericks much of a chance to repeat, as they have the fifth-best odds at 10-1. The consensus seems to be that Dallas built enough momentum to win this year, but they won't do it next season.
